CBB Column: 2010 Big East Tournament Preview

BigEastLogo The Big East Tournament kicks off in action on Wednesday as every team will play a game. Pitt will start the day with a 10 am game against Rutgers. UConn and Cincinnati will play in the afternoon. The night games see Louisville playing West Virginia and St. John’s will play South Florida at 8pm.

#1 Louisville
Player to Watch: Andrew Clark (.385 BA, 12 HR, 56 RBI)
Pitcher to Watch: Thomas Royse (9-1, 2.71 ERA)
Outlook: The Cardinals are looking to lock up a top eight national seed this weekend by winning the Big East Tourney. If the Cardinals make the Big East Championship that will likely be enough for them.

#2 UConn
Player to Watch: Mike Nemeth (.389 BA, 12 HR, 70 RBI)
Pitcher to Watch: Elliot Glynn (7-2, 2.12 ERA)
Outlook: UConn is looking to become a regional host since the early 1990’s and the first time a Northeast program has hosted since the tournament expanded in 1999.

#3 Pittsburgh
Player to Watch: Joe Leonard (.436 BA, 8 HR, 68 RBI)
Pitcher to Watch: Matt Iannazzo (10-2, 3.68 ERA)
Outlook: Right now, the Panthers are in the tourney but come Monday they could be on the other side of looking in.

#4 St. John’s
Player to Watch: Jeremy Baltz (.400 BA, 20 HR, 71 RBI)
Pitcher to Watch: Kyle Hansen (7-1, 3.58 ERA)
Outlook: No chance for NCAA bid unless they win the conference tourney.

#5 South Florida
Player to Watch: Stephen Hunt (.315 BA, 7 HR, 42 RBI)
Pitcher to Watch: Andrew Barbosa (7-2, 2.32 ERA)
Outlook: No chance for NCAA bid unless they win the conference tourney.

#6 Rutgers
Player to Watch: Steve Nyisztor (.400 BA, 3 HR, 45 RBI)
Pitcher to Watch: Casey Gaynor (7-5, 4.98 ERA)
Outlook: No chance for NCAA bid unless they win the conference tourney.

#7 Cincinnati
Player to Watch: Justin Riddell (.313 BA, 7 HR, 28 RBI)
Pitcher to Watch: Brian Garman (4-3, 3.67 ERA
Outlook: No chance for NCAA bid unless they win the conference tourney.

#8 West Virginia
Player to Watch: Jedd Gyorko (.377 BA, 17 HR, 53 RBI)
Pitcher to Watch: Chris Enourato (6-2, 4.87 ERA)
Outlook: No chance for NCAA bid unless they win the conference tourney.
