CLEMSON, S.C. – The Tigers scored eight runs in the first four innings and Alex Frederick tossed 4.2 scoreless innings in relief of one-hit ball to lead #22 Clemson to an 8-3 win over #7 Florida State in front of 5,108 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Tigers finished the regular season tied with the Seminoles for first place in the ACC Atlantic Division with an 18-12 record. By virtue of the Tigers’ three-game sweep over Florida State, Clemson captured its first division title since 2006 and improved to 37-19 on the season. The Seminoles, who suffered their first three-game losing streak since early March of 2009 and their first three-game sweep since the Tigers swept Florida State in 2006, fell to 39-16.

Frederick (6-1) earned the win in relief by pitching 4.2 strong innings. He allowed just one hit, no runs, and two walks with five strikeouts. The junior righthander from Lagrangeville, NY also improved to 6-0 in his last seven appearances (one start). Frederick, starter Dominic Leone, and Tomas Cruz combined to limit Florida State to 0-for-7 with two outs and 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

John Gast (6-3), the first of seven Seminole hurlers, suffered the loss. He gave up four hits, six runs, and three walks with three strikeouts in 2.2 innings pitched. Geoff Parker and Scott Sitz both pitched 2.0 hitless and scoreless innings in relief as well.

No. 1 Cavaliers Stop Miami, 7-4, to Win Series

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 1 Virginia baseball team capped off its regular season with a 7-4 victory at No. 14 Miami Saturday afternoon at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field. UVa clinched the outright ACC Coastal Division title and finished off its ninth ACC series win of the year.

The Cavaliers (45-10, 23-7 ACC) finish the ACC schedule with their most conference wins ever. UVa also posted its second series win ever over Miami. Virginia will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming ACC Baseball Championship, which is slated for next Wednesday through Sunday at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro, N.C. It marks just the second time UVa will hold the top seed (1985). Brackets for the event will be announced Sunday.

Virginia’s pitchers bent but did not break through several jams Saturday. UVa pitchers stranded 14 Miami runners on base, including seven in scoring position. Miami (39-15, 20-10) left seven runners on base in the first three innings alone.

BC Clinches Spot in ACC Championship With 6-3 Win Over No. 6 Georgia Tech

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College baseball team earned its spot in the 2010 ACC Championship as it defeated No. 6 Georgia Tech, 6-3, on Senior Day at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.

The win gives the Eagles a 14-16 mark in the conference this year, which could end up tied with NC State and North Carolina for the final spots in next week’s tournament (pending today’s results). However, BC swept the Wolfpack earlier in the year and it holds the tiebreaker over the Tar Heels with today’s win against the Yellow Jackets.

Sophomore pitching led the way for the Eagles in the win as Taylor Lasko improved to 4-1. He pitched 5.1 innings and allowed three runs on five hits. Classmate Mike Dennhardt came on in relief with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth, shutting the door in that inning and then going on to pitch 2.2 frames of no-hit ball. Matt Brazis picked up his ninth save of the year with a perfect ninth.

Lasko cruised through the first four innings by only allowing two base runners and Dennhardt faced the minimum number of batters in his appearance. The Jackets did not get an extra base hit in the game.

Lloyd’s Walk-Off Double Lifts Wake Forest to 8-7 Win on Senior Day

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Ryan Lloyd’s walk-off double with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Wake Forest to a thrilling 8-7 victory over Maryland on Saturday afternoon at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.

With the win, Wake Forest closes the season with an 18-37 overall record and an 8-22 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Deacs finished the season strong, winning three of their last four conference series and winning six of their last eight games overall. Maryland ends the year with a 17-39 record and a 5-25 record in league play.

With the game tied at seven entering the bottom of the ninth, Wake Forest plated a run to claim the win. With one out, Mac Williamson singled into left field and then moved to second when Carlos Lopez was hit by a pitch. Pinch hitter Ryan Lloyd hit the first pitch he saw from Maryland pitcher Dan Gentzler over the head of Mike Rozak in right field, scoring Williamson from second and giving the Deacs the walk-off 8-7 win.

Pitching in his final collegiate game, senior Joel Ernst earned the win on the mound for Wake Forest to move his record to 2-1. Ernst threw a scoreless ninth inning, allowing a hit. Adam Kolarek (1-4) suffered the loss for Maryland, allowing a run on a hit in two-thirds of an inning.

NC State Locks Up ACC Seventh Seed With 8-4 Win Over Duke

RALEIGH, N.C. – Drew Poulk continued his torrid hitting, and Pratt Maynard and Tarran Senay drove in two runs apiece Saturday as NC State wrapped up the regular season with an 8-4 victory over Duke at Doak Field at Dail Park.

The victory clinched a sweep of the Blue Devils and guaranteed the Wolfpack the seven seed in next week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. NC State improved to 36-20 overall and 15-15 in the ACC. Duke dropped to 29-27 and 8-22.

Freshman Ethan Ogburn, the second of six NC State pitchers to work in the game, picked up the win with two innings of work. He improved to 2-0. Duke starter Sean O’Grady fell to 2-5 with the loss.

NC State jumped on O’Grady for an early 2-0 lead. Kyle Wilson walked and scored on a Dallas Poulk triple. Dallas then scored on a sacrifice fly by Drew Poulk. Duke countered with Jeremy Gould’s leadoff home run in the bottom of the second to trim the Wolfpack lead in half at 2-1.
