Southland Baseball Players of the Week


Jacob Perales bats .526, drives in 13 runs and hits for cycle, while Clint Dempster fans 16 in complete gameFRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi outfielder Jacob Perales has been named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week while Nicholls left-handed pitcher Clint Dempster has been named the Southland Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Perales had a career week, which began when he hit for cycle against UTPA last Tuesday. It was the school’s first cycle since the 2005. The junior from Corpus Christi, Texas (Puerto Moody H.S.), drove in four runs and scored three in the process. At Texas Southern on Wednesday, Perales needed a triple to hit consecutive cycles in a 3-for-5 performance that yielded a career-high five RBI. He homered a third consecutive game Friday in the series opener with UT Arlington with a three-run bomb. He finished the series going 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. In five games last week, Perales was 10-for-17 (.526) with three home runs, 13 RBI and eight runs scored.

Dempster struck out 16 Southeastern Louisiana batters and went the distance in a nine-inning complete game for Nicholls on Friday. The junior from Thibodaux, La. (Thibodaux H.S.) was just two strikeouts shy matching the the conference single game high this season. He allowed just one earned run on seven hits while walking just two. Of his 147 pitches, he threw 102 for strikes. In 11 starts this season, Dempster, who was also named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, is 5-4 with a 3.48 ERA and 86 strikeouts, which is the second most in the Southland.

Honorable mention for hitter of the week goes to UT Arlington shortstop Jesse Payne, Stephen F. Austin outfielder Ryan Priest, McNeese State second baseman Jace Peterson and Texas State designated hitter Jeff McVaney. Honorable mention for pitcher of the week goes to Texas State right hander Carson Smith, UT Arlington right hander Rett Varner and Southeastern Louisiana right hander Tyler Watkins. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland baseball sports information contacts.

Each school’s SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
