SteveSnyderPSU PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Steve Snyder, Penn State

Fr., OF, West Chester, Pa./West Chester East

Snyder captures Penn State’s second consecutive Player of the Week honor and the first of his career after leading the Nittany Lions to a series sweep against Michigan State, who entered the weekend tied for the Big Ten lead. Snyder hit .667 in the series while driving in and scoring six runs over the three-game set. He also stole three bases and knocked a triple as he upped his season average by nearly 50 points, now hitting at a .354 clip. Snyder recorded multiple hits in each of his four games last week, beginning with a 2-for-4 performance vs. La Salle on Tuesday. He then went 3-for-6, 4-for-5 and 3-for-4 in the weekend sweep against the Spartans, giving him six consecutive multi-hit games. Snyder’s best game came on Saturday when he tied his career high with four hits, driving in three runs and scoring four. Since moving to second in the batting order in his last six games, the outfielder has improved his average by 76 points, currently ranking fourth on the team.

Last PSU Player of the Week: Ben Heath (April 26, 2010)

PITCHER OF THE WEEK

David Lutz, Penn State

Sr., LHP, West Chester, Pa./West Chester East

Lutz earns Penn State’s first Pitcher of the Week accolade in almost three years, propelling the Nittany Lions to a series sweep against Michigan State over the weekend. The LutzPSU left-hander picked up two wins in the series, one in relief on Friday and the other in his first career start on Sunday. Lutz tossed two scoreless innings in the series opener, allowing just one hit while fanning two. In the finale, the senior threw a complete game, surrendering just one run while scattering nine hits without walking a batter and striking out four. Lutz accounted for 40 percent of Penn State’s innings pitched last weekend and set a new school record for career appearances (78), also tying the program’s single-season record (29) in the same category. His nine-inning complete game was Penn State’s first since 2008, and he now leads his team with 56.1 innings pitched this year.
