Florida Head Coach Kevin O’Sullivan Reacts to Regional Announcement

The Florida Gators were rewarded for their 42-15 record and SEC East regular season title with the #3 national seed. They will be matched up with Florida Atlantic, Oregon State and Bethune Cookman in the Gainesville Regional, and are paired up across the board with the Miami Regional. Head Coach Kevin O’Sullivan spoke with the media after the announcements were made this morning. The entire video is after the jump, provided by GatorVision.TV

Amongst other topics, O’Sullivan discusses the health of catcher Mike Zunino, as well as question marks for this team going into the NCAA Tournament regarding starting rotation order, the SEC in general, his fabulous freshmen, and acknowledges the struggles the Gators had with Bethune-Cookman in last year’s regional.

NAIA National Championship Recap for May 31st

Results from day three of the NAIA Baseball National Championship in Lewiston, ID:

Embry-Riddle 8, Belhaven 4
Point Loma Nazarene 7, Cal Baptist 6
Cumberland 8, Oklahoma City 1
Lee 8, Lewis-Clark State 0

Embry-Riddle 8, Belhaven 4 (Belhaven eliminated)

The Blazers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when CF Jimmy Gilford hit an RBI triple, then scored on a ground out. They chased Embry-Riddle ace Jonathan Kountis in the third inning when 2B Lake Eiland scored on a passed ball, and DH Brandon Benton hit an RBI single. The game was tied 4-4 at that point. Kountis was replaced by Cory Bevis, and the Blazers got only two hits the rest of the way. Bevis went 6 1/3 innings, held the Blazers scoreless, struck out five, and walked only one. 2010 NCAA Baseball Bracket Announced

INDIANAPOLIS – The field of 64 teams competing for the 2010 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship was announced today by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee.

The national top eight seeds are Arizona St. (47-8), Texas (46-11), Florida (42-15), Coastal Carolina (51-7), Virginia (47-11), UCLA (43-13), Louisville (48-12) and Georgia Tech (45-13).

CBB Column: 2010 NCAA Regional Projections (May 30th)

The College Baseball Blog continues our weekly countdown to the release of the 2010 NCAA Regional Brackets. The brackets are done as if the NCAA Tournament was set to begin today. We used Boyd’s World RPI which was updated through games on Sunday.  You can check out the full bracket below, which is our best projection of what the field could look like come Monday.  The College World Series Selection show will be aired at 12:30 EST on ESPN.

Hawai’i Claims 2010 WAC Championship

The Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors snapped the four-year string of dominance by the Fresno State Bulldogs in the WAC Tournament to earn a spot in the 2010 NCAA Tournament.  The Warriors held off a late charge by Fresno State to earn the 9-6 victory in Mesa, Ariz. on Sunday afternoon.

Kolten Wong was named the WAC Tournament MVP as he had an outstanding week finishing the tournament 10-for-18 (.555) with seven RBIs, 10 runs scored and six walks and did not strike out in the tournament.  He hit three home runs in the tournament including a pair of critical home runs in the Warriors’ first game against Louisiana Tech, a two-run shot in the bottom of the eighth with his team trailing 6-4 and then a two-run shot in his next at bat in the bottom of the tenth with his team trailing 7-6.

Division I Baseball Championship’s 16 Regional Sites Announced

INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA Division I Baseball Committee announced the 16 regional sites for the 64th annual NCAA Division I Baseball Championship.

America East Tournament: Cantwell leads Stony Brook to America East Title

Stony Brook wins its 2nd championship in 3 years. (Photo: America East)In an unpredictable America East baseball tournament, Stony Brook took the America East championship after beating Albany Friday afternoon, 4-2. This game marked only the third time in America East baseball history that neither one of the top two seeds were involved in the title game; heading into the tournament, the Seawolves had been ranked third, the Great Danes fourth.

The Seawolves, seeded third going into the tournament, were led by the performance of outfielder Pat Cantwell. The sophomore hit the winning two-run homer with only one out in the seventh inning. Read the rest of this entry »

WAC Tournament Day Four Recap/Day Five Preview

Day four at the 2010 WAC Tournament saw Fresno State stave off elimination twice as they continue the quest to maintain domination of the conference tournament.  The Bulldogs eliminated sixth-seeded San Jose State 13-1 in a run-rule seven inning game and then followed up with a 14-5 dismantling of fourth-seeded Hawai’i in the championship game to force the “if-necessary” game and set up a winner take all Sunday finish.

NAIA National Championship Recap for May 29th

Results from day two of the NAIA Baseball National Championship in Lewiston, ID:

Belhaven 3, Lubbock Christian 2
Cal Baptist 10, Tennessee Wesleyan 3
Cumberland 9, Embry-Riddle 1
Lewis-Clark State 10, Point Loma Nazarene 5

Belhaven 3, Lubbock Christian 2 (Lubbock Christian eliminated)

The Blazers pulled off a major upset in their first trip to the Baseball National Championship, and the defending champions went two-and-out in two one-run games. The Chaparrals held the Blazers to five hits, but three of them were home runs.

Three Belhaven pitchers, Chris Bennett, Paul Faulkenberry, and Wade Broyles, combined to hold the Chaparrals to six hits. Bennett started and went 5 2/3 innings, was charged with both of the Chaparrals’ runs, and struck out six. Faulkenberry got a popup after entering the game to end the sixth inning, and got a big strikeout of the Chaps’ best hitter, C Joe Staley, to end the seventh inning. Read the rest of this entry »

Weekend Conference Tournament Viewing Guide

Just in case you’ve been busy the last few months and haven’t been able to catch as much College Baseball as you’d like to, well, you’re in luck. I’ve broken down every remaining Conference Tournament heading into Saturday’s action, with potential bracket buster teams and predictions on who will represent their conference. Well, I’m predicting most of them.   All in all, it’s just a rundown on what’s gone on so far rather than post each conference tourney updates individually, and a guide on what you sould be watching for if you have nothing to do but flip around DirecTV on a Saturday. Cause I know that’s what I’ll be doing. We start off with the multi-bid conferences that have tournament action this weekend (ACC, Big East, Big XII, SEC) after the jump.

WAC Tournament Day Three Recap/Day Four Preview

Day three of the 2010 WAC Tournament saw two more teams eliminated, both in walk-off fashion, and saw the league’s bully take a shot to the mouth.  Third-seeded Nevada knocked of second-seeded New Mexico State with a walk-off two-run home run in the day’s first elimination game but then found a similar fate to the Aggies in the second elimination game of the day as the Wolf Pack were bested by sixth-seeded San Jose State in 10 innings on a walk-off two RBI single.
