Southeastern Louisiana put the tying run on base in the bottom of the eleventh, but Garret Carruth earned his third win of the season warding off the foe with a fanned batter and a groundout straight off his chin to hand Texas State a 12-10 extra-inning victory over the 23rd-ranked foe Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

BATON ROUGE, La. – Alabama nearly erased a five-run deficit, scoring three times in the eighth inning before LSU All-American closer Matty Ott got sophomore left fielder Jon Kelton to ground out with the bases loaded, as the Tide fell to No. 6 Tigers 9-7 in front of an Alex Box Stadium record 12,313 fans Saturday night.

Alabama (22-14, 5-9 SEC) dug itself a 5-0 hole in the second inning but slowly chipped away at the LSU lead and closed the gap to 9-7 in the eighth inning when it loaded the bases with two outs.  Ott threw one pitch in the eighth inning as Kelton hit a ground ball back to the mound and Ott flipped to first baseman Blake Dean to preserve the two-run lead.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The top-ranked Virginia baseball team scored six runs in its final three trips to the plate as it earned an 8-2 victory over No. 20 Virginia Tech Saturday afternoon in front of a sold-out crowd of 4,219 at Davenport Field. With the win, UVa has clinched the series win – its fifth over a ranked team this year. UVa goes for the series sweep at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Virginia (29-8, 12-5 ACC) steadily stretched its lead in the late innings, scoring twice with two outs in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie, then tallying a run in the seventh and three in the eighth to coast to the win. Virginia Tech fell to 24-13 overall and 8-9 in the ACC.

Junior right-hander Brandon Efferson pitched his first complete game of the season, scattering nine hits with one strikeout, and No. 23-ranked Southeastern Louisiana used a five-run eighth inning to pull away and defeat Texas State, 10-1, in a Southland Conference game Friday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

BATON ROUGE, La. – First baseman Blake Dean’s two homers, including a three-run dinger in the second that erased a 4-3 deficit, powered No. 6 LSU to a 12-5 victory over Alabama in the series opener Friday night in Alex Box Stadium.

The Tigers (28-6, 9-4) erupted for five runs with two outs in the second inning after trailing 4-1 entering the frame. Alabama (22-13, 5-8) would not regain the lead after LSU’s five-run barrage was capped by Dean’s three-run homer.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – John Hicks (So., Sandy Hook, Va.) singled to score Dan Grovatt (Jr., Tabernacle, N.J.) to break an eighth-inning tie and lift the top-ranked Virginia baseball team to a 4-2 win over No. 20 Virginia Tech Friday evening in front of packed house of 4,219 fans at Davenport Field.

Virginia Tech (24-12, 8-8 ACC) had tied the game in the top of the eighth on a Andrew Rash solo home run, but Virginia (28-8, 11-5) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning off Hokies’ closer Ben Rowen with Hicks’ single and a Phil Gosselin (Jr., West Chester, Pa.) RBI fielder’s choice.

WAC Weekend Preview (Apr. 16-19)

WAC-Logo After the first weekend of play two familiar names are atop the standings.  All three conference series will take place in the state of California as the three WAC outposts, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State and Hawai’i all converge on the Golden State.  New Mexico State faces San Jose State, Fresno State hosts Louisiana Tech and Sacramento State hosts Hawai’i.  Nevada is the odd team out this week and travels to Seattle for a three game set with Seattle University.

SEC Weekend Preview (April 16th-18th)

The SEC enters their fifth week of play with South Carolina leading the East Division by one game over Florida while Arkansas leads the west by one game over LSU. The marquee series this weekend sees the South Carolina Gamecocks hosting the Ole Miss Rebels. We also see LSU hosting Alabama, Georgia going to Arkansas, Auburn at Vanderbilt, Florida at Kentucky and Tennessee at Mississippi State. The ACC enters another week of action with the marquee series taking place in Charlottesville Virginia between the #29 ranked Virginia Tech Hokies and the number 1 ranked Virginia Cavaliers. Two other series this weekend feature ranked squads facing off with #17 Clemson visiting #5 ranked Georgia Tech and #21 ranked North Carolina visiting #14 ranked Miami. NCBWA 2010 Stopper of the Year Award Midseason Watch List

Irvine, Calif. (NCBWA) — Forty-five players have been named to the midseason watch list for the sixth annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, as announced by the association Thursday.

Leading the elite field with a nation-best 11 saves is Virginia’s Kevin Arico.  The junior right-hander owns a 2.37 ERA and had registered 27 strikeouts in 19.0 innings pitched.

Noe Ramirez Injured, Mertins to Start Friday Against UCSB

UPDATED at 1:02 PM EDT

NoeRamirezFullerton Noe Ramirez was reportedly injured in practice yesterday after taking a line drive to the face, and subsequently breaking a bone in his left hand during a fall. He will be re-evaluated today. Ramirez has been the shining star of the Titan pitching staff this season, going 5-1 with a 3.24 ERA in 8 starts, including 2 complete games. Mertins is 3-1 on the season and leads the team with a 2.15 ERA. The Titans travel up to Santa Barbara for a 3 game set this weekend after winning 2 out of 3 games against arch rival UC-Irvine.
