BIG EAST Baseball Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Following an impressive week at the plate for the Scarlet Knights, BIG EAST home run leader junior Pat Biserta was named BIG EAST Baseball Player of the Week. Red Storm freshman Kyle Hansen earned BIG EAST Baseball Pitcher of the Week recognition after leading St. John’s to a series-clinching victory in Game 3 over Cincinnati.

NCBWA Apr. 19 Division I Poll

DALLAS – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association continues its tradition of NCAA Division I polls for the 13th year with its 2010 weekly surveys. Weekly polls will be circulated from Feb. 22-June 29 following the 64th annual NCAA World Series in Omaha, Neb., and final  CWS competition at historic Rosenblatt Stadium.

Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Weekly Awards

Barrett Barnes (Texas Tech) has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Player of the Week, while Cole Green (Texas) has been tabbed the Pitcher of the Week for games of April 12-18, in voting by a panel of media covering the conference. It is Green’s second weekly accolade, and Barnes’ first honor.

Big Ten Players of the Week

Lyon becomes the third different Hoosier this season to be named Big Ten Player of the Week, leading Indiana to a series victory against Iowa. The junior hit .700 and slugged 1.400 in the series, also scoring five runs and driving in three. In Sunday’s series finale, Lyon had a career day, going 4-for-4 with three doubles, three runs scored and an RBI. The junior also went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in a mid-week game against Valparaiso on Tuesday. With a home run in the series-opener against Iowa on Friday, Lyon recorded homers in three consecutive games, upping his total to seven, which is tied for fourth in the Big Ten. The designated hitter leads the conference with a 1.000 slugging percentage during Big Ten games and is second with a .577 average. The weekly accolade is the first of Lyon’s career.

BATON ROUGE – Third baseman Grant Dozar blasted a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the 14th inning, as No.6 LSU topped Alabama, 6-5, to complete the series sweep Sunday afternoon in Alex Box Stadium.

The Tigers (30-6, 11-4) swept the Crimson Tide (22-15, 5-10) for the first time since 2002. The 14-inning game was LSU’s longest contest since a 15-inning match with UNO at Zephyr Field in Metairie, La. in 2008.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.The 20th-ranked Virginia Tech baseball team scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning to rally from a two-run deficit and complete an 8-5 comeback win over No. 1 Virginia on Sunday afternoon at Davenport Field.

It was the Hokies’ third win over a No. 1 team in the past five seasons, following a 7-6 defeat of No. 1 Miami in 2008 and an 11-2 victory over No. 1 Florida State in 2006. The Hokies are now 5-4 against top-10 teams over the past three weekends.
