Ole Miss Catcher Scott Haltom: Amateur Filmmaker

ScottHoltom Scott Haltom had a bit of fun on Ole Miss’s trip to South Carolina a couple weekends back.  You can check out the video here, but I’ll give you a quick run down of what we learned about the Rebels from this “Flipumentary”:

1) You never want to get into an argument with DH Matt Snyder, because he’s always right.  Or if you’re Anthony Ranaudo, you don’t want to pitch against him either.

2) 3B Zach Miller sleeps in a crib at home

3) XBOX Games: Lego Indiana Jones > Call of Duty

4) Freshman LHP Jordan Cooper is the lost Jonas Brother

5) Golden Corral is the unofficial sponsor of Ole Miss Baseball

(UPDATE) Part 2 can be seen HERE.  It is a must watch.

CBB Column: Tasty Tuesday Talk

MattSzcur Here is some of the stuff we have learned from the mid-week action on Tuesday.

The LSU Tigers had an absolutely terrible loss to New Orleans in Baton Rouge. The Privateers scored four runs over the last two innings to grab the 7-4 victory over the Tigers in the likely last matchup between the schools as UNO heads down to Division 3 next season.

Matt Szczur went a perfect 5-5 at the plate with four runs scored and drove in five RBI as he lead the Villanova Wildcats to a 17-10 victory over cross-town rival Temple. In his first two at-bats, he hit two doubles before adding a triple, a two run-homer, and a seventh inning single to complete the cycle. Szczur is currently leading the team in hitting with a .439 batting average while hitting two homers and driving in 33 runs. Szczur was a FCS All-American in football in the fall and is expected to lead the Wildcats on the gridiron in the 2010 season also.

SEC Recap for April 27th

Here is your SEC Recap for April 27th.

Ole Miss Celebration Photo #4 Georgia Tech 6 Georgia 4

ATLANTA – Matt Skole and Evan Martin delivered big two-RBI hits in Georgia Tech’s six-run, eighth-inning outburst Tuesday night, carrying the fourth-ranked Yellow Jackets to a 6-4 victory in the ninth Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Spring Baseball Classic at Turner Field.

Tech (35-7) won for just the second time in nine meetings between the two teams at Turner Field, before a crowd of 16,194 that braved a chilly and windy night and the threat of rain, and earned their first regular-season sweep of the Bulldogs since 1994. The Yellow Jackets took a 6-5 decision at Russ Chandler Stadium and a 25-6 win in Athens earlier in the season.

O'GradyDuke #2 Virginia 6 #6 Coastal Carolina 3

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia baseball team, ranked No. 1 this week by Baseball America, stopped No. 10 Coastal Carolina’s 17-game winning streak with a 6-3 victory over the Chanticleers Tuesday at Davenport Field. Phil Gosselin (Jr., West Chester, Pa.) hit a second-inning grand slam, which proved to be all the offense the Cavaliers needed behind the strong pitching of Branden Kline (Fr., Frederick, Md.), Tyler Wilson (Jr., Midlothian, Va.) and Kevin Arico (Jr., Flemington, N.J.).

Virginia (35-9) ran its winning streak to six games and gave head coach Brian O’Connor his 300th career win at UVa. O’Connor is in his seventh season at the helm of the Cavaliers.

NAIA Top 25 and Recap for April 27th

Results of the NAIA Coaches’ Poll for April 27, 2010, and Boyd Nation’s Iterative Strength Rating. (poll below)

#1 Lewis-Clark State swept four games games against Concordia-Portland, and only one of the games was close. Tyler Lichty, Stephen Foster, Cody Fassold, and Tyler Knigge got the wins. Although Concordia went home without a win, they got a triple play in the fourth game. With the bases loaded, Brian Burke hit a one-hop ground ball to 3B John Houts. Houts stepped on the bag for one out, then threw to 1B Brady Miletich for the second out. Miletic then threw to C Tommy Whalen for the third out; the baserunner at third, Jason Hague, had headed for the dugout, apparently thinking that Burke’s ball was caught on the fly, and was ruled out for being outside the base path. Upcoming: Oregon Tech May 1-2, Division III George Fox May 4-5, webcast by KOZE.

Max Kautz#2 Cumberland swept a double-header against Martin Methodist, 6-4 and 11-1, and a scheduled third game was cancelled due to inclement weather. C Max Kautz hit a three-run home run in the first game, and another one in the second. Shawn Schaefer struck out ten in the first game. This was his seventh complete game of the season. His record is 10-0, 1.66 ERA, with 73 strikeouts, and he is tied with eight other players, including Scott Swinson of #4 Lee, Chad Blauer of #10 Point Loma Nazarene, Brandt Hinton of #11 Belhaven, David Harden of #13 Southern Polytechnic, Bruce Ammende of #21 York, and Ian Pick of #23 Campbellsville for most wins in the NAIA. In the second game, Aaron Wilkerson struck out nine of the 18 batters he faced (the game was shortened to five innings by the mercy rule), and his record is 8-1, 2.08 ERA. The Bulldogs have a two-game lead over #20 Union U. (TN) in the TranSouth Athletic Conference. Upcoming: Milligan April 28, Lyon March 1-2. CBB Visit: #1 Texas vs. UTSA (April 27th)

For the first time in what feels like forever, I was able to grace the University of Texas press box with my presence. Since work has taken me away from a regular attendance at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, the Longhorns have won 18 of 20 games, including an incredible 16 game winning streak. The Longhorns streak has been highlighted not by strong pitching, a trait that existed prior to the streak, but rather the emergence of offense, scoring less than five runs only four times. Never the less, the team from Austin looked like they were gearing up for a run at not just Omaha, but the first place finish that narrowly eluded them last season.

KoleCalhounASU Kole Calhoun carried the Arizona State Sun Devils last year to the CWS semifinals with an outstanding series with a .563 (9-for-16) in Omaha with three home runs (one a grand slam). Last season, his production started to jump around mid-season and he is starting to get on a similar streak as he is .471 clip (16-for-34) with three home runs and 9 RBI in the last nine games.

Calhoun wasn’t with his early season doldrums as he told Nick Kosmider of The State Press.

Solid Mid-Week Games Tonight

BirminghamCCU  We don’t usually see too many strong mid-week games but tonight is a different story as there are several solid matchups to watch.

#6 Coastal Carolina at #2 Virginia

Coastal Carolina will send Red-shirt junior LHP Jim Birmingham to the mound tonight as he sports a 6-1 record with a 3.33 ERA. I had seen Birmingham in the 2007 Ivy League Championship where he was absolutely bombed by Brown as he transferred to Conway immediately after the season. (FULL ARTICLE) Virginia will counter with Brandon Kline getting the ball as he is 2-0 with a 2.90 ERA. This matchup is much more important to Coastal Carolina as the Chanticleers are looking to solidify a regional host bid and a possible national seed. I think we see a determined Chanticleers team tonight as they pick up the victory over the Cavaliers to make the resume even better.
