Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Player of the Week

For the second week in a row, Robby Price (Kansas) has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Player of the Week, while Thomas Keeling (Oklahoma State) has earned the Pitcher of the Week honor for games of March 29-April 4, in voting by a panel of media covering the conference. It is Keeling’s first weekly accolade and Price’s second.

WAC Players of the Week

DENVER, CO – New Mexico State’s Leo Aguirre and Hawai‘i’s Josh Slaats have been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for March 29-April 4.

Aguirre, a senior from Austin, Texas (James Bowie HS), hit .565 (13-for-23) to lead New Mexico State to a 5-0 record with wins over Texas Tech and Houston Baptist. Aguirre did not strike out once in 23 at-bats last week. After going 3-for-3 against Texas Tech and 10-for-20 in a three-game series at Houston Baptist, Aguirre now leads the WAC with a .444 batting average. On the week, Aguirre posted six doubles, seven RBI and seven runs scored to go along with a .826 slugging percentage and a .630 on-base percentage. Playing first base for most of the week, Aguirre was able to stay error free in helping the Aggies commit only five errors in five games played last week.

• UT top offensive performer during a week in which it posted a 4-1 record, including back-to-back victories on the road against No. 11 Ole Miss to claim its first SEC series victory of the season…Hit at a .524 clip with a team-high 11 hits in 24 at-bats…Also posted a squad best nine runs while blasting out four longballs, including the first two home run performance of his career against the Rebels on Saturday.
• Had four home runs in the first four games of the week to give him a team-leading six on the season…Had at least one hit in all five games during the week to extend his season-long hitting streak to 10 games…Slugged at an incredible 1.095 rate.

Big Ten Players of the Week

Kvasnicka takes home his first career weekly honor after leading Minnesota to a series win on the road against Purdue. The outfielder hit .583 against the Boilermakers, reaching base at a .643 clip and slugging 1.000 for an OPS of 1.643. Kvasnicka scored three runs in the series and drove in seven, recording two doubles. The junior had multiple hits in all three games of the set, including a 3-for-4 performance on Friday. In the series finale on Sunday, he hit the go-ahead double with his team trailing 5-4 in the ninth, driving in two runs to put the Gophers up for good. Kvasnicka ranks among the Big Ten’s leaders with a .613 slugging percentage on the year and is second in the conference with 11 doubles.

ACC Players of the Week

JustinWrightVT GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech, which recorded three wins over ranked teams and earned its first-ever series victory over Florida State, made a sweep of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s weekly baseball honors. The Hokies’ Austin Wates was named the ACC Player of the Week, while Justin Wright received Pitcher of the Week honors for the second week in a row.

CBB Editorial: UNC continues to Struggle

RyanGraepelUNC The college baseball season hasn’t even reach its halfway point yet, but losing 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning of its rubber match with Maryland, North Carolina looked lifeless. So pitching coach Scott Forbes took matters into his own hands and showed both teams and the 557 fans in attendance, just how much yesterday’s game meant to the Tar Heels.

Upset with home plate umpire Phillip Talent’s rather generous strike zone, Forbes started hollering at Talent from the first base coaching box after shortstop Ryan Graepel struck out looking on an outside pitch for the second out. Talent remained nonplussed. Unfazed, Forbes decided to make first base umpire Raymond Green the target of his ire. Green wasted no time tossing Forbes, and the Tar Heels’ pitching coach was escorted from the field. But not before both he and head coach Mike Fox gave all three umpires their two cents.

New York, NY – Brown earned its second consecutive Ivy split on Sunday afternoon, taking one of two against Columbia behind a strong start from junior Matt Kimball.  Kimball, who set a new single season record for saves in 2009 as the closer for the Bears, gave up just one run in six innings in his first start for Brown in nearly two years.

Patriot League Recap

WORCESTER, Mass. - Matt Fouch fired a six-hit shutout and Clint Moore blasted a two-run homer in the opener and Kevin McKague doubled twice and tossed two shutout innings to earn a save in the nightcap as Army swept a Patriot League doubleheader from Holy Cross, Sunday afternoon at Fitton Field.

The Black Knights blanked the Crusaders 6-0 behind Fouch’s strong pitching in the first game, then scored six runs in their first two plate appearances en route to a 10-4 victory in the second game. After dropping the first game of the series by a 19-1 margin on Saturday, Army rebounded with three consecutive wins to claim the weekend series. With the three wins, Army exits the opening weekend of Patriot League play holding down sole possession of first place in the conference standings, one game ahead of Bucknell, Navy, Lafayette and Lehigh, all of which went 2-2 during weekend play.

BATON ROUGE, La. – Two early home runs from rightfielder Mikie Mahtook along with clutch two-out hitting gave No. 4 LSU all the offense it needed to take a 15-5 victory in the series finale against Georgia on Easter Sunday in Alex Box Stadium.

The win gave LSU (23-4, 7-2) its sixth series victory in the last seven against the Bulldogs (10-17, 2-7), dating back to 2002. Additionally, the Tigers have now won seven straight SEC series and 16 of their last 17 league series dating back to the 2008 season.

RALEIGH, N.C. – Andrew Ciencin hit a grand-slam home run in the seventh inning and NC State hung on for dear life in the ninth inning, coming away with a 7-6 nail-biter Sunday in the final game of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series at Doak Field at Dail Park.

NC State, which won the opening game of the series on Friday, won the series two games to one and improved to 18-10 overall and 5-7 in the ACC. Virginia fell to 23-6 and 8-4.

CBB Visit: Army at Holy Cross (April 4th)

The Army Black Knights made the trip to Worcester Massachusetts on April 4th to take on the Holy Cross Crusaders. Both teams entered with identical 10-9 overall records and 1-1 in Patriot League play. Army sent senior LHP Matt Fouch to the hill while Holy Cross countered with senior RHP Bobby Holmes.

The game would remain scoreless until the third inning when Army’s David Darrell led off the inning with a single. He would move up to second when Zach Price would get walked. Both runners would move up a base when Steve May sacrificed them. Junior Clint Moore would follow with a long home run to the right-center field fence to give the Black Knights the 3-0 lead.
