ACC Recap for April 7th

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The fourth-ranked Virginia baseball team was solid in all phases of the game in a 12-2 win over Radford Wednesday night at Davenport Field. Virginia racked up 16 hits in the victory, while the pitching staff limited Radford to just four hits and seven baserunners.

Whit Mayberry (Fr., Alexandria, Va.) made his first start at Virginia and earned his first career win. Mayberry (1-1) pitched five strong innings, allowing one earned run, three hits and one walk while striking out a pair. UVa’s bullpen – Chad O’Connor (R-Fr., Chesapeake, Va.), Tyler Wilson (Jr., Midlothian, Va.),Branden Kline (Fr., Frederick, Md.) and Neal Davis (Sr., Baltimore, Md.) – held the Highlanders to one hit and three baserunners over the final four innings.

Foley’s Tuesday Thoughts

UNFCollier Another Tuesday is in the books and as always, it was interesting to see some of the big conference programs drop games to some of the weaker teams.

The UNC baseball program continued to struggle on Tuesday losing a 4-2 decision to Elon. CBB contributor Michael Lemaire wrote an excellent article about how the North Carolina baseball program has been struggling during the first two months of the season. NAIA Top 25 and recap for April 6th

Results of the NAIA Coaches’ Poll for April 6, 2010, and Boyd Nation’s Iterative Strength Rating. (poll below)

Mike Richard#1 Lewis-Clark State swept four games against Azusa Pacific. The third game of the series was an 8-7 win in 12 innings. Brian Burke hit a grand slam home run (his 13th home run of the season) in the fifth inning, and Travis Georgius hit an RBI single in the 12th to win it. The Warriors won the fourth game 6-5, on an two-RBI single by Bryan Abrey in the bottom of the ninth. The Warriors have seven pitchers with ERA’s less than 2.0; Stephen Foster is 2-1, 0.50 ERA, Tyrell Poggemeyer is 2-0, 0.92 ERA, with 31 strikeouts. Upcoming: at Division III Willamette April 10-11.

#2 Oklahoma City swept three games against Oklahoma Christian, two of them shutouts. Dustin Williams pitched a complete game for the first shutout, Mike Richard went 8 1/3 innings, allowed four hits and struck out ten in the second one, a 2-0 win for the Stars. Richard is 7-1, 2.17 ERA with 47 strikeouts on the season, and he is the Sooner Athletic Conference pitcher of the week. Williams also has seven wins. The Stars lead the SAC with a 14-1 record. BATON ROUGE, La. -  Rightfielder Mikie Mahtook hit for the cycle and the third-ranked Tigers pounded 20 hits as LSU defeated Alcorn State, 17-5, Tuesday night in Alex Box Stadium.

Mahtook became the first Tiger to hit for the cycle since Aaron Hill accomplished the feat on April 5, 2003 against South Carolina. Mahtook went 4-for-4 with five runs scored as he doubled in the first inning, singled in the second, ripped a triple off the wall in the fifth and blasted a two-run dinger in the sixth.

ATLANTA – Mark Pope scattered four hits over eight innings, while Matt Skole and Chase Burnette hit home runs to lead the second-ranked Georgia Tech baseball team (26-3, 11-1 ACC) over Kennesaw State (13-18, 4-5 A-Sun), 8-2, Tuesday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The eight innings were a career high for Pope, who improved to 4-0 on the season with the win. The sophomore right-hander struck out six batters, allowing just two runs to cross the plate.

NCBWA National Players of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)­ released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending April 4, today. Virginia Tech junior utility player Austin Wates was named National Hitter of the Week, while South Florida junior left-handed pitcher Andrew Barbosa was named National Pitcher of the Week. This marks the third-straight week that a USF pitcher has earned the national recognition. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

Clint Moore named finalist for AAU Sullivan Award

ArmyClintMoore WEST POINT, N.Y. - Clint Moore is entering territories reserved for the nation’s most decorated amateur athletes.

Army’s junior shortstop has been named one of six finalists for the AAU Sullivan Award, which honors the nation’s outstanding amateur athlete. Presented annually since 1930, the Sullivan Award is also based on leadership, character, sportsmanship and the ideals of amateurism, it was announced on Monday evening.

The only college baseball player to be nominated for the award, Moore is joined on the list of finalists by Angela Bizzari, a cross country star at the University of Illinois, Zak Boggs, a standout soccer player from the University of South Florida, Olympic luge athlete Erin Hamlin of Remsen, N.Y., volleyball star Megan Hodge of three-time reigning national champion Penn State University and Amy Pamiero-Winters, a record-setting paralympic ultra-marathon specialist from Hicksville, N.Y.

Choice overcomes Stigma

MichaelChoiceUTA One of the things that has changed in the baseball world over the last few years is the lack of African-Americans playing the sport. Michael Choice of UT-Arlington is trying to change that as he is leading the Mavericks with a .388 average, 11 homers, and 30 RBI. I had him ranked as the 13th best player in the country during the preseason.

BIG EAST Baseball Players of the Week

USFPOW PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Andrew Barbosa became the third straight USF pitcher to earn BIG EAST weekly baseball honors after a convincing performance against Cincinnati on April 2. As BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, Barbosa was joined by Louisville senior first baseman Andrew Clark as BIG EAST Player of the Week for the week’s recognitions.

NCBWA Apr. 5 Division I Poll

DALLAS – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association continues its tradition of NCAA Division I polls for the 13th year with its 2010 weekly surveys. Weekly polls will be circulated from Feb. 22-June 29 following the 64th annual NCAA World Series in Omaha, Neb., and final CWS competition at historic Rosenblatt Stadium.
