Barbosa a Hidden Gem?

AndrewBarbosaUSF Greg Aumen of the St. Petersburg Times has an excellent feature on South Florida LHP Andrew Barbosa. He is a 6’8 235 pound lefty out of San Juan Puerto Rico who has stepped up his game this year. He is currently 4-1 with a 2.55 ERA in his first eight starts of the season.

NCBWA Apr. 12 Division I Poll

DALLAS – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association continues its tradition of NCAA Division I polls for the 13th year with its 2010 weekly surveys. Weekly polls will be circulated from Feb. 22-June 29 following the 64th annual NCAA World Series in Omaha, Neb., and final CWS competition at historic Rosenblatt Stadium.

Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Weekly Awards

Aaron Senne (Missouri) has earned the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Player of the Week honor, while Logan Verrett (Baylor) has been selected the Pitcher of the Week for games of April 5-11, in voting by a panel of media covering the conference. Senne collects the second weekly accolade of his career, while Verrett is a first-time recipient.

Big Ten Players of the Week

LaMarre earns his second career Player of the Week honor and his first this season after leading Michigan to a series win against Purdue over the weekend. The outfielder hit .692 and slugged 1.077 on the strength of three doubles and a triple vs. the Boilermakers. He also recorded three hits in every conference game, extending his hitting streak to 10 games dating back to last season. Against Central Michigan on Wednesday, LaMarre made his first start since suffering an injury at Texas Tech on Feb. 20. He went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in a 13-7 win. In eight appearances this season, LaMarre has four multi-hit games and is hitting .519 with a .704 slugging percentage.

CBB Visit: UConn vs Villanova (April 11th)

UConnBaseballPhoto I made the trip to Storrs Connecticut on Sunday afternoon for the final game of the UConn-Villanova series. One of the stories throughout the beginning of the season has been the strong start by the Huskies who entered the game with a 21-7 record while being 6-2 in Big East play. Villanova entered the game with a 18-11 record while being 2-7 in Big East play. UConn sent Matt Barnes to the mound while Villanova countered with Kyle McMyne.

Offensive Explosion in Chicago as Flames Sweep Bulldogs

UIC Chicago, IL – Not exactly a pitching clinic at Les Miller Field on a very pleasant Saturday as the University of Illinois Chicago Flames hosted the Butler Bulldogs for a Horizon League doubleheader.  A combined 48 runs and 65 hits paired up with 6 errors made for an interesting 6:00 of baseball with UIC taking both games and sweeping the weekend series.  The ball was flying out of the park in the early game with a total of 11 home runs smacked as the Flames won 21-11.  In the second game doubles were more popular with a total of 13 hit in the UIC 12-4 win.

Big Ten Recap for April 11th

Iowa won its Big Ten-opening series with a 4-2 victory in the rubber match on Sunday. Hawkeyes sophomore Phil Schreiber pitched a career-high eight innings, giving up one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts. Kevin Lee picked up his sixth save, retiring the side in order in the ninth. Zach McCool and Phil Keppler led the Iowa offense, each with two hits, one run and an RBI. Craig Lutes and Thomas Shelton had two hits each for the Illini, while Lutes scored a run and Shelton drove one in. Lee Zerrusen was tagged with the loss.
