CBB Column: ACC Weekend Preview (April 30-May 2nd)

The ACC has only four in conference series this week as Clemson and Florida State will be hosting out of conference series. The best series of the weekend sees Virginia Tech and Boston College battling for seeding position for the ACC Tournament. The other ACC teams in action are Virginia at Duke, Georgia Tech at NC State, and Maryland at Miami. Florida State will play their out of conference series against LeMoyne while Clemson will host Florida Gulf Coast.

#2 Virginia at Duke

The Virginia Cavaliers head down to Duke this weekend for a key series. The Cavaliers enter with a 36-9 overall record while being 15-6 in ACC play. They are led on offense by Keith Werman who is hitting .453 with 20 RBI and has stolen eight bases in eleven attempts. Phil Gosslein is second on the team with a .394 average while hitting five homers and driving in 41 runs. Danny Hultzen has been one of the best pitchers in the country as he has a 6-1 record with a 2.00 ERA.

Duke enters the weekend with a 25-18 record while being a disappointing 7-14 in ACC play. Will Piwnca-Worms is the top hitter with a .327 average with five homers and 36 RBI. The Blue Devils pitching rotation has been Marcus Stroman as he is 5-1 with 3 saves and an ERA of 3.79. In his last start, he pitched a complete game allowing three runs and striking out 10 batters.

#4 Georgia Tech at NC State

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets make the trek to Raleigh this weekend to take on the NC State Wolfpack. The Yellow Jackets enter the weekend with a 35-7 overall record while being 16-5 in the ACC. They are led on offense by Tony Plagman who is hitting .388 with a team leading 15 homers and 57 RBI. They are led on the mound by Deck McGuire who is 5-2 with a 2.69 ERA.

NC State enters the weekend with a 26-17 overall record while being 9-12 in ACC play. They are in need of a solid conference weekend series victory as they are battling for a spot in the ACC Tournament. They are led on offense by Dallas Poulk who is hitting .388 with eight homers and has drove in 46 runs this season. The starting pitching is led by Jake Buchanan who is 4-4 with a 4.22 ERA.

Maryland at #14 Miami FL

The Maryland Terrapins head down to Coral Gables this weekend to take on the Miami Hurricanes. Maryland enters the weekend with a 15-30 overall record while being 4-17 in ACC play. They are led on offense by Brandon Padula who is hitting .361 with 30 RBI. Brett Harman has been the most consistent starter as he is 4-6 with a 4.26 ERA in 11 appearances including 10 starts.

The Hurricanes enter with 31-11 overall record while being 15-6 in ACC play. They are led on offense by Yasmani Grandal who is hitting .428 with 10 homers and 47 RBI. They are led on the mound by Eric Erickson who is 4-1 with a 2.66 ERA.

Boston College at #21 Virginia Tech

Boston College will go down to Blacksburg VA this weekend to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies. BC enters this weekend with a 24-17 overall record while being 12-9 in the ACC. They have won eight of their last nine games in ACC action with sweeps over Wake Forest and NC State while taking two out of three from Maryland. Senior leadoff hitter Robbie Anston is the leading hitter on the team with a .363 average while hitting three homers and driving in 28 RBI. Pat Dean is the top pitcher on the team with a 5-0 record with a 3.50 ERA.

Virginia Tech enters this weekend with a 29-14 overall record while being 11-10 in ACC play. Austin Wates leads the offense with a .408 average while driving in 34 runs. Jesse Hahn missed his last start due to an injury but is expected to pitch this weekend as he is 5-2 with a 2.81 ERA.

The best series of the weekend could be in Tallahassee. Game one final: Le Moyne College 3, Florida State 1. While they may not be high profile, Le Moyne College has a very strong baseball program. Go Dolphins!
