O'GradyDuke #2 Virginia 6 #6 Coastal Carolina 3

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia baseball team, ranked No. 1 this week by Baseball America, stopped No. 10 Coastal Carolina’s 17-game winning streak with a 6-3 victory over the Chanticleers Tuesday at Davenport Field. Phil Gosselin (Jr., West Chester, Pa.) hit a second-inning grand slam, which proved to be all the offense the Cavaliers needed behind the strong pitching of Branden Kline (Fr., Frederick, Md.), Tyler Wilson (Jr., Midlothian, Va.) and Kevin Arico (Jr., Flemington, N.J.).

Virginia (35-9) ran its winning streak to six games and gave head coach Brian O’Connor his 300th career win at UVa. O’Connor is in his seventh season at the helm of the Cavaliers.

#4 Georgia Tech 6 Georgia 4

ATLANTA – Matt Skole and Evan Martin delivered big two-RBI hits in Georgia Tech’s six-run, eighth-inning outburst Tuesday night, carrying the fourth-ranked Yellow Jackets to a 6-4 victory in the ninth Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Spring Baseball Classic at Turner Field.

Tech (35-7) won for just the second time in nine meetings between the two teams at Turner Field, before a crowd of 16,194 that braved a chilly and windy night and the threat of rain, and earned their first regular-season sweep of the Bulldogs since 1994. The Yellow Jackets took a 6-5 decision at Russ Chandler Stadium and a 25-6 win in Athens earlier in the season.

#14 Miami FL 9 St. Thomas 6

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Zeke DeVoss, Stephen Perez and Scott Lawson combined to go 7-for-11 with five RBI and Eric Whaley picked up his fourth win as No. 11 Miami rallied to defeat St. Thomas, 9-6, Tuesday night at Alex Rodriguez Park. Michael Broad went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run for the Hurricanes who homered four times in the game.

The win was Miami’s 30th of the season as the Hurricanes improved 30-11 overall. The victory also marked UM’s sixth straight in mid-week play.

#21 Virginia Tech 9 VMI 2

LEXINGTON, Va. – Five different players tallied two hits apiece, and the Virginia Tech pitching staff limited VMI to five hits, as the Hokies defeated the Keydets 9-2 in non-conference baseball action at Gray-Minor Stadium on Tuesday.

Shortstop Tim Smalling and left fielder Buddy Sosnoskie each hit home runs and had two RBIs apiece for the Hokies, who improved to 29-14 overall and 18-4 in non-league play. The Keydets fell to 29-13 with their eighth consecutive loss.

#25 North Carolina 6 High Point 2

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Ryan Graepel’s walk off grand slam lifted No. 25 North Carolina over High Point 6-2 in extra innings Tuesday night at Boshamer Stadium. Greg Holt earned the win improving the Tar Heels to 26-17 overall. High Point’s Cory Swickle suffers the loss as the Panthers fall to 22-22 on the year.

Holt (2-2) threw 1.1 shutout innings allowing just one win. In the junior’s last three appearances he posts two wins and a save.

George Mason 20 Maryland 6

College Park, Md. – The George Mason baseball team played its longest game of the season but despite almost four hours of action, the contest was never in doubt as the Patriots pounded Maryland for 20 runs on 19 hits as Mason beat the Terrapins, 20-6 on Tuesday at Shipley Field. Mason swept the season series from Maryland for the first time since 2002.

Ryan Soares hit a pair of home runs, the first multi-homer game by any Patriot this season, snapping an 89 at-bat homerless streak. The senior shortstop who entered the game 10th in the nation in RBI per game was 2 for 4 with six RBI and he also hit his 12th sacrifice fly of the season. He leads the nation in that category and is just two away from tying the single-season record for sacrifice flies. Dan Palumbo and Dan Schafferman each had multiple RBI as well while Jeremy Haas had four hits.

Duke 2 North Carolina A&T 1

DURHAM, N.C. – Dennis O’Grady hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to give Duke a 2-1 win over North Carolina A&T on Tuesday evening at Jack Coombs Field.

With the bases loaded and the score tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth, O’Grady cracked a deep fly ball to the left field warning track for his second hit of the game. His RBI knock drove in Will Piwnica-Worms, who hit a two-strike double to spark the late rally.

Boston College 6 Quinnipiac 1

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Senior Dane Clemens brought a shutout into the ninth inning as the Boston College baseball team beat Quinnipiac, 6-1, Tuesday at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.

Clemens established new career highs with 8.2 innings pitched and seven strikeouts. He tossed 114 pitches and 76 of them were strikes. The Pelham, N.Y. product brought the shutout into the ninth, but lost it with a bases loaded walk.

Clemens faced the minimum number of batters through the first three innings with each of those frames ending in double plays. He also retired 14-straight batters from the fourth to eighth innings.
