#20 Southeastern Louisiana 11 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 3

Chris Franklin made the most of his first career start on the mound as he recorded a complete-game four-hitter and helped No. 20-ranked Southeastern Louisiana to an 11-3 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the final game of a Southland Conference series Sunday at Chapman Field.

Franklin (5-4), the Lions’ closer and 2009 All-American, allowed two base runners and one hit after the third inning as Southeastern (30-12, 13-8 Southland) snapped a season-high three-game losing streak and avoided its first sweep since last season at Texas State.

The senior right-hander got off to a rough start against A&M-CC (16-24, 8-13 Southland) as he gave up a pair of hits, walked two and hit a batter in a three-run first inning for the Islanders. After that, the Oneonta, Ala., native settled down walking one and giving up a second-inning single to Chris Vergne.

Franklin, who fanned seven batters and forced 11 ground ball outs, retired six straight batters beginning in the third before Omar Garcia reached on a leadoff single in the fifth. After Trey Hernandez reached on an error to start the sixth, Franklin buckled down and retired the final 12 batters he faced. FULL STORY

UT Arlington 9 Central Arkansas 6

Michael Choice went 3-for-5 and tied the UT Arlington all-time career home run record, launching the 31st of his career, in UTA’s 9-6 victory over Central Arkansas Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark. The victory marks the Mavericks first weekend series sweep of the season.

The Mavericks (20-21, 13-8 SLC) win their fifth consecutive conference game and sixth in a row against the Bears (12-27, 4-17 SLC) as they also swept UCA in Conway, Ark., last season in their first ever meeting.

“That’s our first sweep of the season and I give our guys a lot of credit,” UT Arlington head coach Darin Thomas said. “Logan (Bawcom) didn’t have his best stuff today but he got us all the way to the eighth inning and Watson came in and did what he had to do. Those three wins get us back in the hunt in league play.”

Catcher Chad Comer also went deep, hitting his fifth home run of the season, in the in the fourth inning. Comer went 2-for-4 and led all players with three RBI.

Junior right-handed pitcher Logan Bawcom (4-3) pitched 7.1 innings while scattering 11 hits and allowing five runs with four strikeouts in his sixth straight start pitching at least 7.0 innings.

Senior lefty Brian Watson pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn his first career save. Watson allowed one run on three hits after entering the game with the bases loaded and the Mavs leading 8-4 in the eighth inning.

Central Arkansas left-handed pitcher Chase Huchingson (1-3) was handed the loss pitching 4.0 innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on six base hits with two walks and two strikeouts. FULL STORY

The victory snapped a five game losing streak for McNeese which is now 21-18 on the season and 11-10 in league play. SFA, which had defeated the Cowboys in the two early games, fell to 26-12 and 13-7.

McNeese scored 13 runs in three middle innings to overcome an early 4-0 SFA lead and go on to the victory.

Jaden Dillon, who was getting his third start, went five innings and nailed down the pitching victory. He gave up five hits, six runs (five earned), walked five and struckout three.

Zach Butler hurled 3.1 innings, giving up two hits and one run and Ryan Sampere got the final two outs, tossing all zeroes.

Dillon ran his record to 5-0 with the victory.

After staking SFA to a 4-0 lead, the Cowboys came back with five runs in the fifth, two in the six and six in the seventh. They also added two in the ninth on Irvine’s ninth home run of the season. FULL STORY

Nicholls State 13 Sam Houston State 3

The Nicholls State University baseball team (20-19, 10-11 Southland Conference) pounded out 13 runs on 13 hits. Meanwhile Colonel starter Tyler Minto limited Sam Houston State (16-22, 9-12 Southland) to just three runs on eight hits as Nicholls invoked the Southland’s ten-run rule to beat the Bearkats 13-3 in 7.0 innings on Sunday.

Sunday’s win in the rubber match of the three-game series between the two Southland Conference rivals was a milestone victory for the Colonels on many fronts. With the win, Nicholls claimed their first 20-win season since going 22-31 in 2005. Now with ten conference wins, Nicholls surpassed their 2009 Southland win totals and recorded their first double-digit conference win campaign since going 11-15 in the Southland in 2002.

Coupled with last weekend’s two-out-of-three series victory at Central Arkansas, the Colonels have won consecutive conference series for the first time since 2001. FULL STORY

Northwestern State 8 Texas State 0

Andrew Adams and Chad Sheppard combined to throw a five-hit shutout as Northwestern State snapped a four-game losing streak after an 8-0 Southland Conference baseball win over Texas State on Sunday.

The win improved the Demons to 26-14 overall and 13-7 in conference play as they move back into a tie for second place with Stephen F. Austin – a loser to McNeese State on Sunday, in the league standings. Texas State fell to 24-14 and 15-6 in the league and holds a game-and-a-half lead over the Demons and Lumberjacks for first place.

“We got a nice all-around effort today,” said head coach J.P. Davis. “We came through at the plate, we were clean defensively, we pitched great, we played smart. We stayed right in the thick of it after coming through a very tough week.”

After dropping the first two games to the Bobcats in large part to costly errors that resulted in seven unearned runs scored, Davis shuffled up the lineup which seemingly worked in the Demons favor.

Adam Roy moved from first base to third and went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Chase Lyles knocked in a run as he was moved to shortstop. Trevor Geist went 1-for-3 with two RBIs at the DH spot. And the Demons, who committed seven errors in Friday and Saturday’s losses combined, was perfect in the field on Sunday. FULL STORY

UTSA 14 Lamar 4

UTSA exploded for 10 runs in the first three innings and the Roadrunners ended a season-long six-game losing streak with a 14-4 rout at Lamar on Sunday.

UTSA (14-23, 5-16 SLC), which tied a season-high with 20 hits and posted its highest-scoring game in more than three weeks, jumped all over Cardinals starter Jonathan Dziedzic for five runs in the first and they tacked on four more in the following frame to chase the southpaw from the contest after he recorded just four outs.

The Birds went on to score single runs in the third and fifth and three more in the ninth to polish off the victory.

Leading the early offensive onslaught was freshman Ryan Dalton, who added to his team-leading home run total with a two-run shot in the opening stanza and a three-run bomb in the second. Dalton drove home a career-best six on the day and now has 12 homers this spring, which is a new UTSA freshman single-season record. The Sugar Land native finished the weekend series 7-for-12 (.583) with a triple, three long balls and eight RBIs.

Meanwhile, junior Tyler Carpenter took care of extending his hitting streak to a career-long 18 games early, as he lined an 0-2 pitch from Harrington up the middle to lead off the contest. Carpenter finished the day 3-for-6, which was his 10th multi-hit game during the streak (fifth three-hit performance), and he is hitting .407 (33-for-81) since it began on March 26. FULL STORY
