ATLANTA – Thomas Nichols had five hits, including two doubles and two home runs, to lead the third-ranked Georgia Tech baseball team (33-5) to an 18-4 victory over Georgia Southern (21-17) in midweek action Wednesday at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The five hits were a career-high for Nichols, who also added a career high five RBI in his 5-for-5 performance. Four of his hits went for extra bases, as he grabbed two doubles in addition to his sixth and seventh home runs of the season.

#4 Virginia 10 George Mason 3

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The second-ranked Virginia baseball team racked up 15 hits in posting a 10-3 win over George Mason Wednesday evening at Davenport Field. Six Cavaliers notched at least two hits as the Cavaliers rolled to the win.

Reed Gragnani (Fr., Richmond, Va.) and Keith Werman (So., Vienna, Va.) – the Cavaliers’ eight- and nine-hole hitters – each recorded three hits for Virginia (31-9). Gragnani set career highs with his three hits and three RBI.

#10 Florida State 12 Charleston Southern 4

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – On a night reserved for the awareness of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease) the Florida State Seminoles defeated Charleston Southern, 12-4, at Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles out-hit the Buccaneers 14-8 and scored in five of the eight innings they came to bat to earn the mid-week victory before welcoming the Miami Hurricanes for a three-game series this weekend in one of the top rivalries in all of college baseball.

Hunter Scantling gained the win in relief of Tyler Everett and improved his record to 2-2. Scantling entered in the second after Everett pitched a 1-2-3 first inning after his father, Jimmy Everett who is battling ALS himself, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Scantling pitched five innings, allowed two runs and struck out a career-high seven batters in his second longest outing of the season.

NC State 8 #21 East Carolina 6

GREENVILLE, N.C. – A win is a win is a win, and NC State will take this one but it was not a thing of beauty. Errors were the order of the day Wednesday at Clark-LeClair Stadium. NC State and East Carolina committed six errors apiece and the two teams combined for eight unearned runs, but the Wolfpack outplayed the Pirates offensively when it counted, the late innings, scoring five runs in the seventh and eighth innings to record an 8-6 come-from-behind victory over the Pirates.

NC State, which improved to 8-6 with the win, now has won four games in a row, five of its last six, and nine of its last 12. The Wolfpack has won eight of the last 11 meetings with East Carolina. The Pirates dropped to 24-14 with the loss.

#24 Clemson 22 USC-Upstate 4

Clemson, SC – John Hinson went 5-for-6 with a school-record-tying three homers and seven RBIs in #20 Clemson’s 22-4 win over USC Upstate at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Wednesday night. The Tigers improved to 24-14, while the Spartans dropped to 13-30.

Clemson scored 17 runs in the first four innings and never looked back. The Tigers’ 18-run margin of victory was their largest since Clemson defeated Wake Forest 26-1 on May 18, 2006.

When Clemson scored seven runs in the second inning and seven runs in the third, it was the first time the Tigers scored at least seven runs in consecutive innings since May 14, 1991, when Clemson scored seven runs in the fourth and eight runs in the fifth in a 24-8 win over Georgia Tech in the ACC Tournament at Greenville, SC.

#29 North Carolina 13 Davidson 0

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Seven Carolina pitchers threw a combined three-hit shutout as North Carolina defeated Davidson 13-0 Wednesday night at Boshamer Stadium. Brian Goodwin paced the Carolina attack with two hits and five RBI. The Tar Heels totaled 18 hits en route to improving to 23-16 overall. Davidson was plagued by four errors falling to 17-20 on the year.

Greg Holt (1-2) earned the win in his first career start. Holt allowed two hits while striking out four Wildcat batters in four innings of work on the staff day. Zach Bernard, Bryant Gaines, Jimmy Messer, R.C. Orlan, Garrett Davis and Teddy Mitrosilis combined to throw six shutout innings while striking out seven and walking just three.

Boston College 9 Northeastern 3 (Beanpot Championship Game/Brockton MA)

BROCKTON, Mass. – The Boston College baseball team won its first Beanpot since 2006 and its ninth overall as it defeated Northeastern, 9-3, Wednesday night at Campanelli Stadium.

Junior Mickey Wiswall and sophomore Anthony Melchionda both hit long three-run homers in the game. It was Wiswall’s 12th of the season and Melchionda’s fourth. Wiswall went 2-for-4 with two runs as did junior Matt Hamlet. Senior Robbie Anston was 3-for-5 with a double.

Towson 3 Maryland 1

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Freshman righthander Mike Volpe earned the first win of his college career by pitching five shutout innings as three Tiger (12-27) pitchers combined to pitch a seven-hitter, leading the Tigers to a 3-1 victory over the University of Maryland (15-25) at a very damp Shipley Field on Wednesday evening.

In the best outing of his young career, Volpe shut out the Terrapins on four hits through the first five innings before senior lefthander Wes Shifflett pitched two shutout innings of relief. Junior righthander Drew Permison earned his second save of the season by pitching the final two innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit.

UNC Greensboro 13 Wake Forest 7

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sophomore Alex Frederick had a career-high five RBI and UNC Greensboro had a season-high six doubles as the Spartans cruised past Wake Forest, 13-7, on Wednesday evening at the Wake Forest Baseball Park.

Senior Alex Shelton picked up his first win of the season for the Spartans (16-21) after allowing two runs in 2 1/3 innings. Warren Slack was credited with his first save after pitching the final 3 2/3 innings and allowing just two hits and no runs.
