Hicks #1 Virginia 4 #29 Virginia Tech 2

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – John Hicks (So., Sandy Hook, Va.) singled to score Dan Grovatt (Jr., Tabernacle, N.J.) to break an eighth-inning tie and lift the top-ranked Virginia baseball team to a 4-2 win over No. 20 Virginia Tech Friday evening in front of packed house of 4,219 fans at Davenport Field.

Virginia Tech (24-12, 8-8 ACC) had tied the game in the top of the eighth on a Andrew Rash solo home run, but Virginia (28-8, 11-5) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning off Hokies’ closer Ben Rowen with Hicks’ single and a Phil Gosselin (Jr., West Chester, Pa.) RBI fielder’s choice.

#5 Georgia Tech 8 #17 Clemson 6

ATLANTA – Chase Burnette’s two-out, walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th lifted the fifth-ranked Georgia Tech baseball team (29-5, 13-3 ACC) to an 8-6 win over No. 16 Clemson (23-12, 10-6 ACC) in the series-opener Friday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.

After sophomore Matt Skole kept the inning alive by drawing a walk, Burnette sent a 2-1 pitch from Clemson reliever David Haselden over the wall in right-center to give Tech its 13th conference win of the season. The Jackets remain in first place of the Coastal Division.

#8 Florida State 16 Duke 3

CARY, N.C. – Sixth-ranked Florida State (27-8, 11-5 ACC) extended its road win streak in the ACC to five games with a 16-3 victory over Duke (20-15, 5-11 ACC) Friday evening at the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, N.C. The win marked the sixth of the season for the Seminoles in the Carolinas and 32nd in the last 35 games against the Blue Devils.

"Well, I was very pleased with (Sean) Gilmartin," said head coach Mike Martin. "I thought he had a good outing. I thought we had some very good at-bats and it was a good one to get. We know that there is a lot of baseball left. We can’t get too excited and we have to be ready to go tomorrow."

#14 Miami 7 #21 UNC 5

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 13th-ranked University of Miami baseball team hit three home runs and took advantage of three North Carolina errors in Friday night’s series-opening 7-5 win over the 21st-ranked Tar Heels at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.

The Hurricanes (25-9, 12-4 ACC) scored four runs in the first inning and plated runs in four of the first five innings off UNC ace Matt Harvey. The Tar Heels (22-14, 6-10 ACC) battled back, but the `Canes never relinquished their lead en route to the series-opening win.

NC State 4 Maryland 2

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – There’s something about Shipley Field that really suits Jake Buchanan’s fancy. Two years ago, Buchanan made his first college start here and tossed a complete-game five-hitter, throwing 98 pitches and beating the Terps 12-1. Buchanan made his triumphant return to Shipley on Friday night and tossed a complete-game six-hitter, throwing 99 pitches and beating the Terrapins 4-2 in the first game of a crucial three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series.

With the win, NC State kept pace with Boston College in the race for third place in the ACC’s Atlantic Division. The Wolfpack and Eagles now are tied with 7-9 conference records. NC State is 23-13 overall. Maryland fell to 4-12 in the conference and 14-22 overall.

Boston College 11 Wake Forest 9

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Sophomores Anthony Melchionda and Andrew Lawrence combined to drive in seven runs as the Boston College baseball team beat Wake Forest, 11-9, Friday afternoon at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.

Melchionda went 3-for-4 with a game-high four RBI and two runs while Lawrence finished the day 3-for-5 with three RBI.

Senior John Spatola went 3-for-4 with a double, two steals, an RBI and three runs. Junior Matt Hamlet and sophomore Brad Zapenas both had a pair of hits.
