Deck McGuire: Possible #1 Overall Pick by the Nationals?

Deck McGuire has been gaining more and more attention after going undrafted in 2007 out of high school. In addition to last year’s achievements of winning the ACC Pitcher of the Year and being named to multiple All-American teams, McGuire is now being profiled as a possible alternative for the Nationals in the #1 draft position.

Bryce Harper has been slated in that position since the moment he entered Junior College, making him eligible a year early, but Zach Berman of the Washington Post lists McGuire as an alternative. Berman compares McGuire to John Lackey, and gets the opinion of many from University of Virginia, including Brian O’Connor.

Mark,

Harper’s a good player, but outside of catching (which) to big for (understood he’s 17 – but in a 20 yr old body) he only matches up with good college players even with what he is hitting. Still needs to prove himself against top college pitching. If not catching he is just another good college player (saw him in nationals), he is no where near Lebron James.

Deck Mcquire good choice but it would interesting to see how a few others stack up for that spot: Alex Wimmers – RHP Ohio State (Just dominating), Drew Pomeranz – LHP Mississippi (leading in strike outs), Brandon Workman – Texas needs very strong end of season but good. Overall Alex Wimmers would be an interesting selection because of Strasburg. Different type of pitcher then Strasburg, This would force hitters to see hard thrower 95+ and then 92 – 94 with great off speed stuff.

Wimmers and Strasburg might be an interesting combination.
