MarkPopeGT #2 Georgia Tech 8 Kennesaw State 2

ATLANTA – Mark Pope scattered four hits over eight innings, while Matt Skole and Chase Burnette hit home runs to lead the second-ranked Georgia Tech baseball team (26-3, 11-1 ACC) over Kennesaw State (13-18, 4-5 A-Sun), 8-2, Tuesday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The eight innings were a career high for Pope, who improved to 4-0 on the season with the win. The sophomore right-hander struck out six batters, allowing just two runs to cross the plate.

#5 Virginia 9 James Madison 4

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 4 Virginia baseball team downed James Madison, 9-4, Tuesday evening in front of 2,521 spectators at Davenport Field.

Tyler Cannon (Sr., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBI. John Barr(Jr., Ivyland, Pa.), Kenny Swab (Jr., Kernersville, N.C.) and Chris Taylor (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.) each had two hits. Stephen Bruno (Fr., Audubon, N.J.) also had a pair of hits to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Phil Gosselin (Jr., West Chester, Pa.) went 1-for-3 to stretch his career-best hit streak to 13 games.

North Florida 3 #8 Florida State 1

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team got back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead and relied on excellent pitching to hold on for a 3-1 victory over No. 7 Florida State on Tuesday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

The victory was the 10th win over a ranked Division I opponent for Hall of Fame head coach Dusty Rhodes. With the victory, Rhodes stands one win shy of 1,200 for his career and four back of 900 victories at UNF.

#12 Miami (FL) 8 Florida Atlantic 5

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Freshman second baseman Frankie Ratcliff drove in four runs, scored three and hit his second homer of the season as the ninth-ranked University of Miami baseball team picked up an 8-5 win over FAU Tuesday night at the FAU Baseball Stadium.

The win – Miami’s sixth straight – pushed the `Canes record to 21-7 overall this year while FAU dropped to 16-12. The victory also marked the second of the year for the `Canes against FAU after Miami won, 12-5, last week in Coral Gables.

#14 Clemson 15 Georgia 5

Athens, GA – John Hinson went 2-for-3 with a grand slam and a career-high five RBIs to lead #11 Clemson to a 15-5 victory over Georgia in front of 3,783 fans at Foley Field on Tuesday night. The Tigers, who took a 1-0 lead in the home-and-home midweek series, improved to 21-8, while Georgia fell to 10-18.

The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and scored six more runs in the second inning to take a commanding lead. Clemson added a run in the seventh and five runs in the eighth for the 10-run win. The victory snapped Georgia’s four-game winning streak over the Tigers in the series.

Elon 4 #20 UNC 2

ELON, N.C. – Ken Ferrer allowed one run over 5.2 innings and Thomas Girdwood slammed the door shut to earn his Southern Conference record-tying 29th career save as the Elon Phoenix defeated the 20th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels 4-3 in front of 1,839 fans from Latham Park on Tuesday night.

Elon (20-10) picked up its third victory of they season over a top-25 program, matching the most wins over the top-25 since the start of the 1999 campaign.  The Phoenix program has 22 wins over ranked foes.  Elon is also 4-0 against ACC squads this year.

NC State 11 Coppin State 2

RALEIGH, N.C. – Harold Riggins hit two big flies and drove in four runs, and four NC State pitchers combined on a six-hitter Tuesday evening to lift the Wolfpack past Coppin State 11-2 at Doak Field at Dail Park.

NC State, which improved to 19-10 on the season, won for the fourth time in its last five games and the fifth time in its last seven games. Coppin State lost for just the second time in its last 10 games and fell to 10-13.

George Mason 3 Maryland 1

Fairfax, Va. – The George Mason baseball team entered Tuesday’s contest with Maryland 13th in the nation in scoring, averaging 9.1 runs per contest. Needless to say, Mason found itself locked in a pitching duel with the Terrapins, one the Patriots were more than happy to win behind a pair of sixth-inning sacrifice bunts as Mason took a 3-1 victory over Maryland. The Patriots allowed just two hits and three walks in the game and no earned runs while turning three double plays.

In the sixth, Brig Tison singled to left to extend his hitting streak to 14 games and Ryan Soares was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. Matthew Passauer came on in relief for the Terrapins and the first batter he faced was Mark Hill, who sacrificed the runners into scoring position. Shane Davis got Tison home with a sharp single to right and Dan Palumbo’s sacrifice bunt made it 3-0 as Soares scored.

Virginia Tech 13 NC Central 0

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Five Virginia Tech pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout, and 12 Tech batters contributed hits, as the Hokies posted a 13-0 non-conference victory against North Carolina Central at English Field on Tuesday. The game was shortened to seven innings under a pre-game 10-run agreement.

Tech improved to 21-10 overall with the win. The Hokies collected 16 hits, including three homers, a triple and three doubles. Freshmen Andrew Rash and Brent Zimmerman contributed the first multiple-hit games of their college careers. They were joined with two hits by shortstop Tim Smalling and outfielder Mike Kaminski. Matt Blow topped Tech with three runs batted in, while Kaminski and left fielder Steve Domecus each drove in a pair.

Duke 9 William and Mary 5

CARY, N.C. Jeremy Gould drove in a career-high five RBI, and Ben Grisz and Marcus Stroman combined for six shutout innings out of the bullpen to lead Duke to a 9-5 win over William and Mary on Tuesday evening at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.

Gould sent in all five of his runs in his first two at bats with a two-out, two-run homer in the first inning and a three-run double in the third. Ranked eighth all-time at Duke with a .336 career batting average, Gould finished 2-for-4 for his sixth multi-hit performance in his last eight games.
