CBB Visit: Army at Holy Cross (April 4th)

The Army Black Knights made the trip to Worcester Massachusetts on April 4th to take on the Holy Cross Crusaders. Both teams entered with identical 10-9 overall records and 1-1 in Patriot League play. Army sent senior LHP Matt Fouch to the hill while Holy Cross countered with senior RHP Bobby Holmes.

The game would remain scoreless until the third inning when Army’s David Darrell led off the inning with a single. He would move up to second when Zach Price would get walked. Both runners would move up a base when Steve May sacrificed them. Junior Clint Moore would follow with a long home run to the right-center field fence to give the Black Knights the 3-0 lead.

 

Army would strike again in the fifth inning when with two out Steve May would get hit by a Bobby Holmes pitch. Clint Moore would then follow with a four pitch walk to put runners on first and second. Kevin McKaugue would then hit a gap shot to the outfield to drive in one run to make it 4-0. Ben Koenigsfield then would drive in both runners to make it a 6-0 lead.

The Holy Cross offense could not figure out Matt Fouch as they were limited to six hits with Matt Perry having the best day going a perfect 3-3 at the plate with three singles. Fouch finished the day with a seven inning complete game shutout to up his record to 3-1 on the year. Holmes was ineffective throughout the game walking four batters, allowing four hits, and hitting a batter while giving up six runs in his 4.2 innings of work. Holmes record drops to 0-3.

In Game 2, the Black Knights picked up four runs in the first inning with by getting only two hits off of Holy Cross starter Vaughn Hayward. The big hit of the inning was by Kevin McKague who got a two run double to the right field gap. Army would tack on two more runs in the second inning, when Clint Moore got a two out double to the right-center field gap to extend the Black Knights lead to 6-0.

John Sills would score the first run of the day for the Crusaders in the bottom of the sixth inning as he scored on a Nick Ciardello single through the right side of the infield. John Sills would also pick up an RBI in the seventh inning to cut the Army lead down to 6-2. Holy Cross would continue to cut into the Crusaders lead by Nick Ciardello leading off the bottom of the eighth to make the score 6-3. They would add another run on a bases loaded walk by Kevin McKague to cut the lead down to two runs.

Army would extend the lead in the ninth by grabbing two hits and taking advantage of two errors as the Black Knights scored four runs as Army was able to hold on for the 10-4 victory. Steve Cummings would get the win for Army putting him at 3-1 on the year and Kevin McKague gets his fifth save of the season while Vaughn Heyward gets the loss to drop his record to 1-2 on the year.
