Here is your ACC Recap for April 30th.

DannyHultzenUVA #2 Virginia 12 Duke 3

DURHAM, N.C. – Danny Hultzen (So., Bethesda, Md.) tossed Virginia’s first complete game in more than two years in leading the No. 1-ranked Cavalier baseball team to a 12-3 win over Duke Friday evening at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, N.C.

Hultzen tied a career high by striking out 13 batters and retired 21 of the final 22 hitters that he faced. He allowed three runs (two earned) and four hits and did not walk a batter. It marked Virginia’s first complete game since Pat McAnaney pitched eight innings in a complete-game loss at Miami on April 25, 2008. It was the first nine-inning complete game since McAnaney went the distance against Virginia Tech on March 29, 2008.

CBB Column: Joe Leonard Setting the Pace for Pitt

JoeLeonardPitt When asked about his Pittsburgh Panthers’ 12-3 run so far this season, junior third baseman Joe Leonard gave a clear reason for their success. “Hitting is contagious.”

If Leonard’s statement is correct, than he’s the one setting the lead. Leonard is having an outstanding year for the Panthers, with a .455 batting percentage, along with a team leading 56 RBIs. His Panthers sit at second in the Big East, a spot not many within the conference expected them to be in the pre-season.

“All year, we have been hitting the ball well,” explained Leonard about the team’s performance. “If one guy has a bad at bat, we can pick it up and make it up for the team.”

Links from Around the Nation

SzczurNova Here are some of the best links from Around the Nation.

The first story today is Villanova’s Matt Szczur will be missing this weekend’s series against Georgetown as he is starting to take medication for a bone marrow donation he will be giving in the next couple of weeks. The New Mexico Lobos have started the season off well but San Diego State is standing between them and a bid to the NCAA Tourney. There is a major showdown between Pitt and UConn this weekend which could go far in deciding who will be the top seed in the Big East Tourney. The Merced-Sun Star has a good article on former high school teammates Brett Mooneyham and Dylan Floro. All four of the ACC schools located in North Carolina are currently in trouble of missing the 2010 ACC Tournament after they have struggled throughout the year. The final article talks about the great baseball atmosphere at Ole Miss and Mississippi State which could be the best in the nation. Feel free to check out the articles below.

CBB Column: UCSB’s Nick Capito gets back to the Mound

capito2 A very scary moment happened last Saturday at Blair Field as the UCSB Gauchos were taking on the Long Beach State Dirtbags. The first Dirtbag hitter of the bottom of the fourth inning was Shortstop Devin Lohman, and he struck a 1-1 offering that hit Capito directly between the eyes.

Capito was able to walk off under his own power, but the 1,279 fans in attendance got quite the scare. Nick not only was fine after the incident (minus some bruising and eventual black eyes), but he is actually slated to start on Saturday against UC-Riverside.

I was able to contact Nick and ask him a few questions, as well as obtain photos of the incident courtesy of UCSB Athletics. He shared with us his experience, including a certain friend who was looking out for him, as well as his thoughts on aluminum bats, as well as what he needs to accomplish the rest of this season and going into next.

CBB Column: ASU vs. UCLA Series Debate

UCLAStadium Leading up to the postseason, one of the most anticipated conference battles is this weekend’s Pac-10 tilt between #3 Arizona State and #9 UCLA. If you haven’t been following each team this season, we’re here to help.

I contacted The State Press Sports Editor Nick Kosmider and Bruins Nation Baseball Author Ryan Rosenblatt to debate on why their teams will take the much anticipated matchup at Jackie Robinson Stadium this weekend. Both writers are usually updating fans of each team via Twitter with insight during games, so follow them @ryeUCLAbaseball and @nickkosmider. They go over everything there is to know about this series:

SEC Recap for April 28th

Here is your SEC Recap for April 28th.

#7 Arkansas 5 Missouri State 4

FAYETTEVILLEBrett Eibner totaled four RBI and Jordan Pratt came out of the bullpen to pick up the win as the No. 7 University of Arkansas baseball team beat Missouri State, 5-4, Wednesday night at Baum Stadium. Eibner hit his 14th home run of the season to power the Razorback offense, while Pratt struck out four in 2.1 innings of relief work against the Bears.

"(Pratt) did a great job," head coach Dave Van Horn said. "He came in and settled the game down. If it weren’t for the weekend and having to save some pitchers, we would have left Jordan in there but we have to get him ready for the weekend."

Arkansas looking to go back to Omaha

Andy Wilkins Arkansas In my 2010 SEC Western Division preview, I predicted that the Arkansas Razorbacks were going to take the division this year and received much criticism over it especially from LSU fans. (FULL ARTICLE) Right now, the Razorbacks are in first place in the Western Division with a two game lead over LSU and Ole Miss as they have a 33-8 overall record while being 13-5 in the SEC. Leading Arkansas at the plate has been super sophomore Zack Cox who is sporting a .436 average while hitting six homers and driving in 43 runs.
