Jose Macias tosses No-Hitter as FP Rolls

JoseMacias LANTANA, Fla. (March 15, 2010) – Junior right-hander Jose Macias (Bronx, N.Y.) threw a no-hitter on Monday afternoon to lead the No. 14/20 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University baseball team to an 11-0 victory over Saint Michael’s in neutral-site, non-conference play at Santaluces Sports Complex. Earlier in the day, junior third baseman Derek Ingui (Sterling, Mass.)clubbed a two-run home run as the Ravens rallied from a 4-2 deficit to defeat Nyack, 5-4.

With the wins, Franklin Pierce improves to 9-1 (0-0 Northeast-10) and extends its winning streak to six games.

Big East Players of the Week (March 15th)

Weekly polls will be circulated from Feb. 22-June 29 following the 64th annual NCAA World Series in Omaha, Neb., and final CWS competition at historic Rosenblatt Stadium.

Big Ten Players of the Week

Dittman picks up his second career Player of the Week honor after batting .615 as the Illini went 2-2 at the Caravelle Resort Classic last week. The first-baseman slugged 1.000 and reached base at a .722 clip, combining for an OPS of 1.722. Dittman also scored seven runs and drove in five over the weekend, recording two multi-hit games to raise his batting average to a conference-leading .563. The junior’s best game came on Friday in Illinois’ 11-10 win over No. 10 Coastal Carolina. He went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles, scoring three runs and driving in two, also picking up a stolen base. In the Illini’s win over Ball State on Sunday, Dittman went 2-for-2 with two runs, three RBI, a home run and a stolen base, reaching base in all four of his plate appearances.

ACC Players of the Week (March 15th)

PatDeanBC GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia outfielder Dan Grovatt has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, while Boston College’s Pat Dean received Pitcher of the Week honors following their performances in last weekend’s series that opened conference play.

Grovatt was Virginia’s top hitter during a 3-1 week which included a series win at No. 2 Florida State – UVa’s first-ever series win against the Seminoles.

Pac-10 Weekend Recap (March 12-14)

It was a weekend of almosts in the middle of the Pac-10. A couple of the middle Pac-10 teams hoping to make a statement that they are really top-notch teams came close and showed well, but they came up just a bit short of their goals. Even so, the conference proved yet again that they’re a force to be reckoned with excellence at the top and with surprising depth.

The real question developing now is can anyone challenge the top two? The Pac-10 has two undefeated teams in UCLA and Arizona St., both of whom have looked extremely impressive. There are multiple strong teams behind them, though, so both better be ready for a challenge come conference play because it is only March and nothing is determined in March.
