CBB Column: 2010 NCAA Tourney Projections

It has already been pointed out on this site at length, but this weekend reinforced the mediocrity of the teams in California. Only UC Irvine and UCLA have played well enough to host a regional and the bracket reflects that. If teams like Cal State Fullerton and San Diego don’t start to pick up the pieces, the committee will have their hands full with trying to accommodate for travel and avoiding seeding teams from the same conference in a regional together…trust me, it was hard enough this week. Checking in on UCLA

Bauer Ryan Rosenblatt who contributes occasionally to this site wrote a great article about the UCLA baseball program where he says the first couple of games of April will help define the season for the Bruins. UCLA has started the season 13-0 with some impressive victories over Oklahoma, Vanderbilt, and Mississippi State to name a few but have frequently disappointed late in the season. Hopefully things change this season for UCLA behind the great arms in the rotation and in the bullpen.

Metrodome a Lifesaver?

Metrodome Pat Borzi of the New York Times has a great article on Ron Petrich. He is in charge of scheduling all the college baseball games at the Metrodome from February through April. The dome hosts many Division 2 and 3 games around the clock while serving as the home for the Minnesota baseball and softball programs during the early part of the season. Petrich said he was able to accommodate a record of 240 college games this season while setting up a total of 420 games. You can read the full article by clicking here.

The other interesting thing about the dome is the ability to roller skate on the concourse for $6.50. Has any of our readers ever done that?

CBB Column: Checking in on Former College Stars (AL Edition)

bates.aaron The start of spring training games gives us a chance to check in on some Former College Players and how they are adjusting to pro baseball. Today, we check in on some American League stars and will be checking in on the National League in the coming days.

OF – Colin Curtis, NYY (Arizona State, 4th Round, 2006)

Curtis started off Spring Training strong with a walk-off 3-run homerun against the Pittsburgh Pirates during the first game of Spring Training, and has a chance to make the Opening Day roster.  His chances depend on the what the Yankees see in Jamie Hoffman, who is currently hitting .125 with only one extra basehit in 16 AB’s.  Bleacher Report has a good analysis on Colin’s chances of making the 25-man roster.
