Rocky Ward Becomes the All-Time Winningest Coach At NM State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State head baseball coach Rocky Ward recently became the all-time winningest coach at NM State surpassing Jim Kwasny who tallied 300 wins from 1969-82.

Ward, who is in his 12th season as Aggie head coach, picked up win No. 301 when his team defeated Akron 8-3 in game one of a doubleheader, Saturday, Feb. 27 at Presley Askew Field.  NM State was victorious in game two as well and blasted the Zips 17-5 in the series finale to takes Ward’s win total to 303.

“There aren’t that many coaches who were able to go to a program and become the winningest coach in the program,” Ward said.  “I guess it established kind of a legacy.  There are a lot more important things than the things I have done, but you are kind of proud when you are at the top and made your mark on the program.”

Pac-10 Weekend Recap (Feb. 26-28)

Pac-10Logo The Pac-10 was never going to replicate their play of a week ago. An .862 winning percentage is just not something an entire conference keeps up week after week and the Pac-10 didn’t. The conference flashed a little of the opening week’s flash, but was also roughed up in a weekend’s showing that truly covered all bases. Some teams (UCLA, Washington St., Oregon St.) proved that they’re contenders, while others (Stanford, USC) made their opening weekend heroics fade into a memory of long ago.

Random Thoughts from the Weekend

KyleWinklerTCU Here are some of my random thoughts from this past weekend of action.

What is going on at Cal-State Fullerton? They have a 2-4 overall record which is shocking as nearly everybody had them going to the CWS in their preseason picks. Fullerton finished last season with a .329 team batting average while they are struggling this year at .228. Most of the blame has to go to the offense right now as they have a team ERA of 4.50 this year when compared to 3.53 in 2009. The Titans lost a few of the clubhouse leaders from last year’s squad in Josh Fellhauer, Jared Clark, and catcher Dustin Garneau. Fullerton also lost two out of three to TCU last season but ran off 18 victories in their next 20 games. Both victories came under assistant coach Sergio Brown as Serrano was suspended for bumping an umpire last weekend. Mark Rafferty will have a full report on Fullerton this week when he is planning on seeing them against San Diego on Tuesday night.
