#1 LSU 8 Pepperdine 1

BATON ROUGE — Second baseman Tyler Hanover went 3-for-4 and scored twice, and designated hitter Matt Gaudet knocked in three runs as No.1 LSU defeated Pepperdine, 8-1, Thursday night in Alex Box Stadium.

The Tigers (8-0) will face Brown (0-0) Friday at 7 p.m. in Alex Box Stadium. The game will be Brown’s second of a Friday doubleheader, as the Bears will play Pepperdine (3-5) earlier in the day at 2 p.m. in Alex Box Stadium. Admission is free to the Pepperdine-Brown game.

McKinney the answer for the Razorbacks

Jarrod McKinney has been the answer to the top of the lineup for the Arkansas Razorbacks as he is hitting .321 with a homer and five RBI. The Razorbacks are on the road this weekend at California for a three game set.

CBB Column: NCAA Regional Projections (March 4th)

And you thought last week featured some marquee match-ups…

There were the showcase tournaments like the Big East/Big Ten Challenge, Baseball at the Beach, Dodgertown Classic, and the Rice Invitational. Then there were premier out-of-conference match-ups like Texas v. Stanford and East Carolina v. South Carolina. I have to say I grew up in the right era for college baseball. Fan, scouts, and scribes were spread out across the country and they were treated to some fantastic baseball.

#1 Lubbock Christian won two of three against University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, and swept a double-header against University of the Southwest. The Chaparrals are now 13-6. Their leading hitter is C Joe Staley with a .455 average, and their ERA and strikeout leader is Paul Gonzalez, 2-1, 1.11 ERA, and 29 strikeouts with 24 1/3 innings pitched. Upcoming: at Northwestern Oklahoma State (11-3 with two wins over Wayland Baptist) March 5-6, Angelo State March 9. The Angelo State double-header will be televised by Stretch Internet.

#2 Lewis-Clark State is 12-1, and their two most recent wins were against in-state rival College of Idaho, 16-8 and 7-6. In the second game, RF Gino Casini drew a base-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth to bring in the winning run. Colby Hawk is 3-0, 0.00 ERA for the Warriors; Tyler Lichty is 2-0, 1.47 ERA, 17 strikeouts. Upcoming: Division II Central Washington March 6-7.

#3 British Columbia has started their season 10-1. They have yet to play a home game, and their only loss was 6-2 to #10 Fresno Pacific. 3B Keaton Briscoe is batting .400 for the Thunderbirds, CF Blake Carruthers is batting .387. RHP Taylor King is 1-0, 1.23 ERA with three saves, LHP Mark Hardy is 2-1, 3.00 ERA with 20 strikeouts. Upcoming: at Corban March 5-6. Read the rest of this entry »

#24 South Carolina 15 Presbyterian 0

COLUMBIA, SC – Scott Wingo and Whit Merrifield each homered and Gamecock starter Nolan Belcher combined with four relievers for a two-hit shutout as 15th ranked South Carolina defeated Presbyterian 15-0 on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference tilt at Carolina Stadium. The Gamecocks are now 5-2 on the year while the loss drops Presbyterian to 1-7 for the season. South Carolina returns to action with a three-game series vs. nationally ranked Clemson. The series begins on Friday at Clemson with first pitch at 6:30 p.m. Saturday’s tilt will be at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C. and is scheduled for 2 p.m. with the finale at Carolina Stadium on Sunday at 2 p.m. as well.

Belcher was dominant on the hill for the Gamecocks with five scoreless innings and just one infield hit allowed. He struck out seven and walked one to earn his first win of the year. Matt Price also struck out one in one inning of relief with Parker Bangs striking out two batters in his stint. Freshmen Ethan Carter and Colby Holmes closed the game out with an inning apiece as well. South Carolina pitchers had 10 strikeouts to two walks on the afternoon. Presbyterian reliever Jesse Harmon went 1.2 innings and allowed seven runs on five hits to suffer the loss. He is 0-1 on the year.

#9 Clemson 6 Dayton 5 (10 innings)

Clemson, SC – Chris Epps scored on a wild pitch in the 10th inning to lift #9 Clemson to a 6-5 walkoff win over Dayton on Wednesday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Tigers improved to 7-0, while the Flyers fell to 4-4. It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

The Flyers scored three runs in the seventh inning to take a 5-4 lead thanks in part to two Clemson errors, but Clemson tied the score with two outs in the eighth inning on a wild pitch. The Tigers scored again with two outs in the 10th inning to pull out the one-run win.

AdamsJosh A seven-run first inning powered No. 3 Florida State (7-0) to a 10-5 victory over No. 5 Florida (5-1) on Tuesday night at the inaugural Florida Four Tourney held at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. It was the first of four regular-season meetings between the Sunshine State rivals, all in different cities. 

The Seminoles exploded out of the gates with seven runs on six hits and two hit batters in the first inning, chasing sophomore starter Anthony DeSclafani (Freehold, N.J.) (0-1). Junior Tyler Holt (2-for-5) opened with a single up the middle, moved to third on a base-hit into right field by sophomore James Ramsey and senior Stephen Cardullo (2-for-3) was plunked to fill the sacks with none out. DeSclafani (3 H, 5 R) then hit junior Mike McGee to bring across Holt and surrendered a two-run single to junior Stuart Tapley (2-for-4) before being replaced by freshman Hudson Randall (Atlanta, Ga.). Sophomore Sherman Johnson re-loaded the bases with a flare into center field and Randall had freshman Justin Gonzalez ground into a 3-6-1 double play, scoring McGee with the fourth run. Redshirt junior Rafael Lopez stroked an RBI double into right center and freshman Jayce Boyd (2-for-4) followed with a two-run homer to left field for his first collegiate homer and a seven-run cushion.

FSUBoyd TAMPA, Fla. – A seven-run first inning proved to be the difference Tuesday night as No. 3 Florida State (7-0) defeated No. 5 Florida (5-1) 10-5 in the second game of the Florida Four Tournament on Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla. The game was the first of four meetings between these intra-state rivals.

With the 10 runs and 13 hits, the Seminoles have posted double-digits hits and runs in each of their first seven games to start the 2010 campaign. Dating back to last season, Florida State has registered double-digit hits in 12 consecutive games.

South Florida looking to make a Statement

coach-lelo-prado South Florida will take part in the Florida Four this evening facing off against the Miami Hurricanes. The Bulls enter the game with a 1-5 overall record after getting swept on Opening Weekend by the Florida Gators and lost two out of three games in the Big Ten/Big East challenge knocking off Illinois for their only win.

2010 Johnny Bench Award Watch List

JohnnyBenchAwardLogo WICHITA, KANSAS – The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced the official watch list for the 2010 Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award delivered by Papa John’s Pizza. Fifty-three catchers were nominated for the award by their coaches. Because the award is given annually to the top division one collegiate catcher, the list will be updated to include other candidates until May 5, 2010.

Cal State Northridge’s Ryan Pineda and Long Beach State’s Steve Tinoco earned Big West Baseball Co-Field Player of the Week honors after outstanding performances at the plate.

Pineda led the Matadors to three wins against West Coast Conference teams by hitting 6-for-15 (.400) with four runs scored and three RBI.  He added four stolen bases in the three contests.
