Big West Players of the Week (March 8th)

NCBWA Mar. 8 Division I Poll

DALLAS – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association continues its tradition of NCAA Division I polls for the 13th year with its 2010 weekly surveys. Weekly polls will be circulated from Feb. 22-June 29 following the 64th annual NCAA World Series in Omaha, Neb., and final CWS competition at historic Rosenblatt Stadium.

• Powered lead MSU to a sweep of four games against SE Missouri and Michigan State in the BankFirst Baseball Challenge at Dudy Noble Field with a three-home run, 15-RBI weekend…Matched a career-high with a 6-RBI game and belted a walk-off three-run home run vs. SEMO in the opening game…Leads MSU with five game-winning RBI, including two walk-off home runs.
• Registered his second two-home run game of the season and set a career-high with a 7-RBI performance in State’s tournament finale against Michigan State…Climbed into the SEC lead in both home runs (7) and RBI (25).

C-USA Players of the Week

Goodnight Houston sophomore RHP Michael Goodnight has been named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week after tossing a shutout against No. 3 Texas at the Houston College Classic last Saturday. East Carolina junior 2B Cam Freeman and UAB freshman DH John Frost have been named the co-Hitters of the Week after putting up consistent offensive production while leading their respective teams to three victories this past week.

Big Ten Players of the Week (March 8th)

Hurley led the Buckeyes to a 3-1 record last weekend with wins over Duquesne, St. Louis and Fairleigh Dickinson. The senior hit .571 over four games, reaching base at a .609 clip and slugging at a 1.048 rate for an OPS of 1.657. The left-fielder recorded multiple hits in every game, including a 5-for-5 performance on Sunday against the Knights. Hurley also scored six runs and drove in seven over the weekend, recording seven extra-base hits with five doubles, a triple and a home run, coming a single shy of the cycle in Game 1 against the Billikens on Saturday. The weekly honor is the first of Hurley’s career and the second for a Buckeye position player this season.

Southland Conference Recap for March 7th

Texas State 13, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 8

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Andrew Stumph was a double shy of hitting for the cycle and spearheaded an 18-hit outing from Texas State that nearly matched the team’s past two games combined at the plate, leading to a 13-8 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to clinch the first Southland Conference series of the season Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Field.

Pac-10 Weekend Review (March 5-7)

The Pac-10 entered the season’s third weekend with three undefeated teams and by the end of it, that number was whittled down to two. It still proved to be a successful weekend for the league as eight of the 10 teams came away series winners and three of those came away with series sweeps. Through three weeks, the conference is 76-31, good for a .710 winning percentage as they show a depth of quality that was certainly missing a year ago when it was Arizona St. + 9. BATON ROUGE – Freshman left-hander Jordan Rittiner allowed only one earned run in six innings, and centerfielder Leon Landry went 3-for-4 with two triples, as No.1 LSU topped Brown, 9-2, Sunday afternoon in Alex Box Stadium.

The Tigers (11-0) will host UL-Monroe in a mid-week contest beginning Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Alex Box Stadium. LSU will then travel to Shreveport to take on Northwestern State Wednesday at 6 p.m. before returning home to play host to Kansas in a three-game series beginning Friday at 7 p.m.

Game 2: #2 Virginia 13 Wright State 3

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 1 Virginia baseball team finished off a hot day at the plate with a 13-3 victory over Wright State, Sunday afternoon, in the second game of a doubleheader at Davenport Field. In the first game, UVa pounded out 18 hits in an 11-5 win over Dartmouth.

Tyler Cannon (Sr., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) had a big game at the plate, going 3-for-5 with five RBI. He had a key two-run triple to break open a one-run game in the seventh inning and then had a three-run double in the eighth inning. Cannon had eight RBI over the weekend.

Southland Conference recap 03/06/10

Gougler was the only Lion with multiple hits, putting up a line of two-for-three with two runs scored and a walk.

Southeastern Louisiana 4, Texas Southern 1

HAMMOND, La. – The 2010 Southeastern Louisiana baseball team now has the school’s all-time best winning streak all to itself. After tying the mark Friday, the Lions broke it Saturday, taking their 11th straight game to improve to 11-0 on the year. The 4-1 victory over Texas Southern also clinched the series for Southeastern.

Saturday Thoughts

The Binghamton Bearcats picked up a shocking win on Friday night over the Tennessee Volunteers but on Saturday afternoon, the struggles continued. Kennesaw State ended up grabbing a 4-2 victory over the Volunteers behind a strong pitching performances from Josh Carr and J.B. Johnson
