Auburn 8 #20 Alabama 6

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Southeastern Conference’s top offense got the better of the second-best pitching staff in the league as Auburn claimed an 8-6 non-conference win over No. 16 Alabama in the second annual Capital City Classic at Riverwalk Stadium on Wednesday night. Auburn reliever Michael Hurst was named the game’s Most Valuable Player as he shut down the Alabama offense in the middle innings to pick up the win for Auburn, which has now won seven straight games.

"It was a typical Auburn-Alabama baseball game. Both teams played one heck of a ball game tonight," Auburn Head Coach John Pawlowski said. "Michael Hurst came in in middle relief and did an outstanding job for us. Add in Austin Hubbard and when you have to step up and make big pitches, I thought these guys did a really good job for us."

#23 Vanderbilt 18 Wright State 2

NASHVILLE — Vanderbilt broke open a 2-1 contest with a 10-run third inning, highlighted by a grand slam homer by Brian Harris and a three-run homer by Jason Esposito and rolled to a 18-2 win over Wright State Wednesday night at Hawkins Field.

“These midweek games are very difficult to play,” said Vanderbilt head coach Tim Corbin. “I knew they were a good team because we had a tough time with them last year after they beat Georgia. The game got away from them. It doesn’t diminish my thoughts of them as a team. I know how they feel because we felt that way last Tuesday (17-2 loss to WKU). It’s the nature of the game. I’m happy with how we played because we hit the ball very well. We had a lot of hard balls, quality at-bats, and some great defense.”

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State (12-9) struck for four runs in the seventh inning Wednesday night to rally past the University of Memphis (9-12) at Dudy Noble Field. The Bulldogs trailed the Tigers 5-1 after four innings before staging the comeback.

"I was pleased with our comeback tonight," said State skipper John Cohen. "But we are still a long way from where we need to be. We just aren’t making the plays in situations and we are putting too much pressure on ourselves, and that is on the coaches."
