Quick Thoughts from Saturday

TrevorBauerUCLA There was not many upsets on this Saturday night as only four Top 30 teams picked up a loss to an unranked squad. The biggest story of the day was Virginia making an outstanding ninth inning comeback on the Florida State Seminoles. The Cavaliers entered the ninth behind 8-3 but got to the Seminoles bullpen for six runs in the top of the ninth to steal the victory from the Noles. We should see how this affects Florida State on Sunday during the final game of the three game set.

Trevor Bauer of UCLA picked up where Gerrit Cole left off on Friday night by striking out 15 batters on Saturday against Mississippi State in eight innings. Bauer’s record improves to 3-0 with a 2.38 ERA in 22.2 innings pitched.

The Rice Owls were behind 7-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning when they exploded for 12 runs in the frame to grab a 14-7 lead which ended up finishing as a 26-11 victory for the Owls. Anthony Rendon led the attack by going 3-5 with two homers and eight RBI on the day.

One of my major questions heading into the weekend was how the UMass Minutemen would do in their season opening series against Oklahoma State. On Friday, UMass lost a competitive 5-3 ballgame to the Cowboys. On Saturday, it was a much different story as the two teams played a doubleheader where UMass was outscored 30-2. I still can’t figure out why UMass started the season so late as it gives them a competitive disadvantage from the rest of the A-10 conference.

Scott Copeland of Southern Mississippi pitched a complete game three hitter over the Missouri State Bears as the Golden Eagles picked up the 6-0 victory. Copeland is now 3-0 with an ERA of 1.80 in 30 innings pitched. If he continues at this level, Southern Miss will be a formidable opponent come time for the NCAA Tourney with Todd McInnis and Scott Copeland leading the rotation.

I will be hosting a Live Chat at 10:30 pm Eastern time due to the fact that I was called into work and will not be able to get home until that time. (CLICK HERE FOR LIVE CHAT). Feel free to send in your questions early, if you can’t stay up that late.
