#2 Virginia 14 Dartmouth 3

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The top-ranked Virginia baseball team recorded two big innings in a 14-3 victory over Dartmouth Saturday afternoon in front of 2,414 fans at Davenport Field. UVa (7-2) scored six runs in the second inning, then blew the game open with an eight-run fourth inning.

Phil Gosselin (Jr., West Chester, Pa.) led the Cavaliers’ 16-hit effort with a career-high four hits. Tyler Cannon (Sr., Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) and Steven Proscia (So., Suffern, N.Y.) each added a pair of hits as well as three RBI. Every UVa starter scored at least one time. UVa’s one through four hitters – Gosselin, Cannon, Dan Grovatt (Jr., Tabernacle, N.J.) and Proscia – combined to go 10-for-16 with nine RBI and seven runs.

#3 Florida State 9 #29 Georgia 2

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Timely hitting and quality pitching were the correct formula on Saturday night as third-ranked Florida State (9-0) rolled to a 9-2 victory over No. 25 Georgia (6-5) in front of a packed crowed of 5,287 on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium. Despite falling a run short of reaching double-digits for the ninth straight game, the Seminoles achieved the mark in the hit category posting 13 in game two extending the streak of double-digits hits to 14 straight games.

FSU did all its scoring in the second, third and fourth innings on Saturday night as eight of the nine runs came on two outs. Tyler Holt and Stephen Cardullo paced the offense with three hits a piece, while Stuart Tapley extended his hit streak to a career-best 14 games with an infield single in the fourth. Holt was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle in game two as he collected a double in the first, single in the third and triple in the fourth.

#10 Miami (FL) 9 #5 Florida 6

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Zeke DeVoss, Scott Lawson and Chris Pelaez combined for eight hits and senior closer David Gutierrez came in late in the eighth to shut the door for his third save as No. 10 Miami defeated No. 5 Florida, 9-6, Saturday night at Alex Rodriguez Park. The Hurricanes (7-2) evened their series with the Gators (6-2), setting up the rubber game Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.

After falling behind 3-2, the Hurricanes scored three runs in the fifth and another three in the sixth to pull away from the Gators. Lawson put the `Canes ahead for good in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run triple deep down the line in right. An inning later Nathan Melendres – who had just come on defensively in the top half of the inning – smacked a three-run homer to left to give the `Canes all they needed to pick up win.

#7 Georgia Tech 19 Rutgers 5

ATLANTA – Junior catcher Cole Leonida was 4-for-5 with four RBI, as the No. 4 Georgia Tech baseball team (9-1) compiled a season-high 20 hits in a 19-5 victory over Rutgers (1-7) Saturday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.

The Jackets scored in double-figures for the fifth time this season, tallying their 20 hits against six different Rutgers pitchers in a game that lasted three hours and twenty-three minutes. Tech had just seven hits in each of its previous two games.

#24 South Carolina 7 #9 Clemson 5

GREENVILLE, SC – Three two-out RBI hits from Whit Merrifield, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Kyle Enders were part of a three-run ninth inning as 15th ranked South Carolina rallied from an early four-run deficit to defeat ninth ranked Clemson 7-5 on Saturday afternoon at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C. Carolina improves to 6-3 on the year while the loss drops Clemson to 8-1 for the season. With the two teams splitting the first two games of the series, it sets the stage for the rubber game on Sunday afternoon at Carolina Stadium with first pitch at 2 p.m. Live video broadcast is available at GamecocksOnline.com with the game also being broadcast on the Gamecock Radio Network.

Trailing 4-0 after the first two innings, the Gamecocks fought back with a pair of runs in the third, a run in the fifth, a run in the seventh and three runs in the ninth inning. Jackie Bradley Jr. connected first for the Gamecocks with a two-run homer in the third inning, followed by a RBI base hit in the fifth inning. Merrifield would tie the game in the seventh with a two-out RBI single and then helped start the three-run ninth inning with a RBI double to right center to plate the go ahead run. Bradley followed with his fourth RBI of the game, a RBI single to score Merrifield and after a walk to Christian Walker; the Gamecocks would gain a three-run cushion on Kyle Enders’ RBI single to score Bradley.

#12 North Carolina 7 Michigan 6

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Freshman Chaz Frank went 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored to lead No. 12 North Carolina over Michigan 7-6 Saturday in front of 1662 fans at Boshamer Stadium. The two teams combined for 24 hits and 26 runners left on base in the eventful game. Patrick Johnson (2-1) earned the victory allowing one run on six hits in six innings. Carolina improves to 8-1 and guarantees a series victory with the win, while Michigan falls to 4-6 on the year.

Johnson pitched six effective innings and was assisted by two Tar Heel double plays. Four walks plagued his outing, but the junior was still able to earn his second victory of the season.

Florida Atlantic 15 Boston College 6

Junior shortstop Nick DelGuidice enjoyed a record night to set the pace for an offensive explosion by the Florida Atlantic University baseball team in a 15-6 victory over Boston College on Saturday evening at the FAU Baseball Stadium in Boca Raton.

The Owls pounded a season-high 16 hits and scored a season-high 15 runs to snap a two-game losing streak and even the team’s record to 4-4 for the season. The victory also earned a split of the first two games of the weekend series, with the tie breaker coming up on Sunday, starting at 1 p.m.

Maryland 10 Hofstra 3

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland baseball team defeated Hofstra 10-3 Saturday behind Brett Harman’s arm and the team’s legs, as the Terps set an Atlantic Coast Conference record with eight stolen bases in the game.

Maryland constantly put runners in motion with steals and hit-and-runs and took advantage of its opportunities, going 8-for-21 (.381) as a team with runners on base. David Poutier had a career-high three stolen bases and Matthew Murakami had a pair as Maryland demolished the previous record of five.

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech registered back-to-back shutouts in Blacksburg for the first time since 1970 with a double-header sweep of Long Island University, 6-0 and 11-0, at English Field on Saturday at English Field.

Saturday’s sweep marked the first back-to-back shutouts, home or away, tossed by the Hokies since March of 2003, when they won at Seton Hall and Liberty on consecutive days. It was the first double-header shutout for the Hokies since April 6, 2002, when Tech won a pair of seven-inning games at Villanova, as well as the first-known double-header shutout at home in Tech history.

NC State 14 Quinnipiac 3

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State baseball team’s offense continued to score in double digits and Jake Buchanan shined on the mound as the Wolfpack (9-1) defeated Quinnipiac, 14-3, in the second game of a three game series. The win marked the sixth time in 10 games this season that the Wolfpack scored in double figures, and the third-straight game including yesterday’s 17-6 win over the Bobcats (0-2).

Buchanan (2-1) faced little resistance on the afternoon, allowing just four hits – three singles and a double – and giving up only two hits after the first inning. He struck out seven and didn’t yield a walk.

Duke 7 Temple 0

DURHAM, N.C. Eric Pfisterer struck out a career-high 10 batters and teamed up with relievers Dennis O’Grady and Ben Grisz to record Duke’s second straight shutout in a 7-0 win over Temple Saturday evening at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Pfisterer (2-1), O’Grady and Grisz combined to strike out 18 batters while giving up just four hits, all of which were singles. Pfisterer went six innings and surrendered two hits and a pair of walks and needed just 80 pitches to lock up his second straight win.

Wake Forest 6 Xavier 1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Freshman left-handed pitcher Tim Cooney gave up only one run on six hits in a career-high 7.2 innings pitched as Wake Forest defeated Xavier 6-1 in the second game of a three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.

The Demon Deacons improve to 5-6 on the season while the Musketeers fall to 1-8.

Wake Forest took a 2-0 lead through the first three innings before Xavier pulled within one in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the frame, Mike Murray smashed a two-run homer to extend the Deacon lead to 4-1, and Wake picked up two insurance runs in the seventh to cruise to the victory.
