#4 LSU 13 Binghamton 7

BATON ROUGE, La. – A seven-run eighth inning by LSU erased a 7-6 deficit and powered the fourth-ranked Tigers to a 13-7 win over Binghamton Wednesday night in Alex Box Stadium.

The Tigers (21-3) captured their seventh straight victory and their 17th-straight regular-season win over a non-conference opponent dating back to last season. Binghamton dropped to 6-11 with the loss.

ACC Recap for March 31st

#2 Virginia 17 Towson 4

GraepelUNC CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The top-ranked Virginia baseball team parlayed a pair of huge innings into a 17-4 victory over Towson Wednesday in front of 2,042 fans at Davenport Field. Virginia racked up 16 hits, including seven of the extra-base variety, in the dominating victory.

Virginia’s Jarrett Parker (Jr., Stafford, Va.) went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and five RBI, while Steven Proscia (So., Suffern, N.Y.) snapped out of a recent slump with two triples and four RBI. Stephen Bruno (Fr., Audubon, N.J.) fell a home run shy of the cycle as he went 3-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBI. David Coleman (Jr., Richmond, Va.) also hit a home run for the Cavaliers.

Wednesday Games to Watch

#17 Coastal Carolina at #12 Clemson

The Chanticleers head to Clemson tonight to take on the Tigers in a key out of conference showdown between two squads battling it out for a regional host bid. Coastal Carolina enters with a 19-5 overall record but lost the final two games against San Diego this past weekend. Coastal Carolina will start junior lefthander Matt Rein (3-0, 1.23 ERA) on the mound. He will be making his first career start as he has made eight relief appearances for a total of 22.0 innings pitched this season. He has allowed 15 hits (.195 opponents’ batting average), no homers, and 10 walks with 11 strikeouts. He has also not allowed a stolen base. Rico Noel leads the CCU offense as he is hitting .356 with three homers and 24 RBI while stealing 19 bases in 22 attempts in the early portion of the schedule. Clemson enters with a 18-6 overall record after losing two out of three games to Virginia over the weekend. They will send Dominic Leone (1-0, 6.14 ERA) to the mound who will also be making his first career start, while making seven relief appearances for a total of 7.1 innings pitched. He has given up nine hits (.281 opponents’ batting average) and five walks with eight strikeouts. Clemson’s offense is led by Kyle Parker who is hitting .396 with 10 homers and 24 RBI on the year.

Maryland’s Bakich discusses Ejection

Erik Bakich. Steven Overly/The Diamondback I ended up missing the fact that Maryland Erik Bakich was ejected on March 20th against Georgia Tech by home plate umpire Scott Graham. He ended up having a heated argument with Graham where Bakich allegedly bumped the umpire causing him to be suspended for three games last week.

NAIA Top 25 and recap for March 30th

Results of the NAIA Coaches’ Poll for March 30, 2010, and Boyd Nation’s Iterative Strength Rating.

#1 Lewis-Clark State won two games against College of Idaho, and three more against British Columbia. Four of the five games were close, and the final game of the British Columbia series went eleven innings. The Thunderbirds scored single runs in the top of the tenth and eleventh innings, but the Warriors kept the game going with an RBI single by LF Gino Casini in the bottom of the tenth, then won it when CF Jason Hague scored on a squeeze bunt by DH Connor Moore in the bottom of the eleventh. Brian Burke has 12 home runs for the Warriors. Upcoming: Azusa Pacific March 31-April 2.

David Harden#2 Southern Polytechnic won two of three against Shorter. David Harden picked up his eighth win of the season in a 16-4 win for the Hornets, and he leads the NAIA in wins. Tim Day of Panorama, Australia got the seven-inning complete game win for Shorter. The Hornets lead the Southern States Athletics Conference with an 8-1 record. Upcoming: at #8 Lee April 2-3.

#3 Oklahoma City swept three games against Rogers State, and defeated Bacone. The Stars have won ten straight, and lead the Sooner Athletic Conference with an 11-1 record. Steve Vitale has 12 home runs for the Stars, Matt Presley has 11. Upcoming: Oklahoma Christian April 1 and 3, at Okllahoma Christian April 2.  Read the rest of this entry »

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Fourth-ranked Florida State (20-4) defeated No. 8 Florida (18-6) 7-2 Tuesday evening in front of a sell out crowd of 9,276 at the Baseball Grounds in Jacksonville. The Seminoles collected their sixth win in a row and their third straight over the Gators in Jacksonville. FSU moved to 2-1 against Florida this year with the final game of the regular season series coming on Tuesday, April 13 in Tallahassee.

Geoff Parker and Brian Busch led FSU on Tuesday night as the two Seminole pitchers combined to hold the Gators to just two runs on six hits.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The top-ranked Virginia baseball team scored an 8-5 win over Towson Tuesday at Davenport Field. Kenny Swab (Jr., Kernersville, N.C.) went 3-for-3 and reached base safely in all five of his trips to the plate, while the Cavaliers’ bullpen buckled down to retire 14 of the final 15 Towson batters to seal the win.

Shane Halley (So., Burke, Va.), the first of three UVa relievers, pitched three innings to earn the win and improve to 1-0 this season. Justin Thompson (So., Danville, Va.) pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts before Kevin Arico (Jr., Flemington, N.J.) tossed a scoreless ninth inning to notch his ACC-best ninth save of the season.

Mike Nesseth to Miss Remainder of 2010 Season

Mike Nesseth, a junior RHP pitcher from the University of Nebraska will miss the remainder of the 2010 season with an elbow injury. A precautionary MRI revealed an injury in his right elbow, and the Nebraska medical staff is working with Nesseth, his family and the Husker coaching staff on evaluating potential options, either in a rehab program or surgery.

Zack Cox Arkansas Sophomore 3B Louisville, Ky.
• Powered the Razorback offense in sweeps of McNeese State and Alabama with a .556 batting average, 10 hits, eight RBI, .944 slugging percentage and .667 on-base percentage.
• Posted a career-high six RBI in Arkansas’ series-opening win against Alabama…had the game-tying RBI in all three of Arkansas’ wins against the Crimson Tide…tied a season high with three hits in the finale against McNeese and opener against Alabama.
• Extended his season-opening hit streak to 23 games…three multi-hit games this week pushes season total to 12…second in the SEC with his .435 batting average.

NCBWA Players of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)­ released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending March 28, today. Gonzaga senior outfielder Mark Castellitto was named National Hitter of the Week, while South Florida junior Randy Fontanez was named National Pitcher of the Week. This marks the second week that a USF pitcher has earned the national recognition. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

Matt Purke Enjoying His Time At TCU

For those who haven’t been able to get out to Lupton Stadium to see Purke first hand, you’ll get a preview of a player you could see highlighted in Omaha for the next two seasons.  Purke is 3-0 in 6 starts with a 4.06 ERA and a K/9 of 11.

Austin Maddox succeeding at Florida

AustinMaddoxFlorida As we continue to look at some of the top freshmen in the country, The Florida Times Union has an excellent article on Florida freshman and Jacksonville native Austin Maddox. He is currently leading the Gators with in average (.378), hits (37), doubles (eight), homers (seven) and RBI (33). The Gators will take on the Florida State Seminoles tonight in Maddox’s home town of Jacksonville in the team’s third matchup of the season.
