New Franchise in TCL Selects Home & Team Name

Field (Victoria, TX) The Victoria Baseball Club, LLC, owners of the Victoria Generals, have announced the location for their second franchise in the Texas Collegiate League. The new franchise will be located in Weimar, Texas and play their home games at historic Veterans Memorial Park. The team will be called the Texas Tomcats.

GT’s Roddy Jones looking for success on Diamond

RoddyJones Georgia Tech running back Roddy Jones is trying to transfer his athletic ability from the football field over to the baseball diamond this spring. Last football season, he rushed for 345 yards and three touchdowns as the Yellow Jackets finished ninth in the country. Jones states that the biggest issue trying to play baseball is the fact that he hasn’t played in two years so his timing is off.

Sun Belt Announces 2010 Preseason All-Conference Team and Coaches Poll

BrentzPhoto NEW ORLEANS – Middle Tennessee, the defending Sun Belt Conference regular season and tournament champion, has been tabbed the preseason favorite to win the 2010 league title in a vote of the league’s head coaches. The Blue Raiders received eight of 11 first-place votes from the coaches.

MT is led by junior Bryce Brentz, the reigning SBC Player of the Year and the 2010 SBC Preseason Player of the Year, and Kenneth Roberts, the 2010 SBC Preseason Pitcher of the Year. Both Brentz and Roberts were first-team All-SBC selections a season ago as they led the Blue Raiders to a 44-18 and its 14th NCAA appearance.

2010 Summit League Preseason Poll

SummitLeague ELMHURST, Ill. – After winning its record 12th straight league championship a year ago, Oral Roberts was a unanimous choice to claim its 13th consecutive Summit League crown in 2010 as voted on by the league’s eight head coaches.

The Golden Eagles collected seven first-place votes for a total of 49 points. Centenary came in second with 39 points, followed closely by South Dakota State in the third slot with 36 points and the final first-place vote. Southern Utah (30 points) and North Dakota State (27 points) were each separated by three points apiece for the fourth and fifth positions, respectively. Oakland (16 points), IPFW (14 points) and Western Illinois (13 points) rounded out the voting.

JMU cancels season opening series against Marist

MattBrowning HARRISONBURG, Va., Feb. 12, 2010 – Due to the recent heavy snowfalls in the Shenandoah Valley, James Madison has cancelled its season-opening baseball series scheduled for next weekend, Feb. 19-21, at Veterans Memorial Park. The games are unlikely to be rescheduled.

2010 CBB Season Preview: Southland

2009 marked the first conference championship for the Texas State, while Sam Houston State picked up the SLC Tournament Title and joined the Bobcats in the NCAA Tournament. This season, Texas State is looking for a return to the postseason, while the rest of the conference is taking aim at booking their ticket to a regional by way of the postseason tournament in Corpus Christi. The conference may not be major, but the returning talent definitely is. Led by Team USA OF Michael Choice, the league will feature more than six players who garnered some sort of All-American status last season.

Maine looking to win America East title

MyckieLugbauer Adam Clark of the Maine Campus has an excellent article previewing the 2010 Maine Black Bears season. In 2009, they went 32-23 overall while going 13-11 in America East play as they were started out with a 7-1 conference record before fading down the stretch losing 10 out of their last 16 to miss out on the conference playoffs. They have a tough schedule which includes a series against Oregon State and North Carolina whil also making a season opening trip to Lamar on February 19th.

Valpo’s Woodson seeing Success on Diamond and Hardcourt

TracyWoodsonValpo Tracy Woodson is no novice when it comes to working in college athletics. A Division I head baseball coach is a feat in itself, but unlike most other head coaches, Woodson is also a Division I men’s basketball official.

Woodson, in his fourth season leading the Valparaiso baseball program, is the only coach the Crusaders have had since joining the Horizon League in 2007-08. He came to Valparaiso with eight years of professional baseball coaching and managing experience and 13 seasons of professional playing experience.

2010 Preseason Southern Conference Polls

MattMurray SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The 2009 Southern Conference regular season champion, Elon, and tournament champion, Georgia Southern, have been tabbed co-favorites for the 2010 campaign in balloting of the league’s 11 baseball coaches. The media members who cover SoCon baseball have selected Elon as the top team in 2010, narrowly edging out GSU.

The Phoenix received five of 11 possible first-place votes and 91 points from the league’s head coaches while garnering 13 of 27 first-place nods on the media ballots. Coach Mike Kennedy’s team returns three starters in the field and 12 of 15 pitchers from the 2009 team which went 23-4 in the SoCon and 41-18 overall en route to winning its second consecutive league regular season title.
