CBB Visit: New Mexico 3 Texas 1 (Feb. 21st)

MaxWilletUNM2 It was a battle of great pitching and great hitting as the Lobos from New Mexico played against the top-ranked Texas Longhorns in the rubber match of the opening series.

Sophomore Austin Dicharry took the mound in hopes of keeping the Longhorns from dropping their first weekend series since going 0-2-1 against an A.J. Morris led Kansas State Wildcats last April, while junior LHP Mike LaChappelle was tabbed to take the mound for New Mexico.

CBB Visit: New Mexico 6 Texas 5 (Feb. 20)

MaxWilletUNM As Augie Garrido said in his postgame comments, the pressure of being undefeated is no longer a problem for the Longhorns. The Lobos used a trio of three-hit games from 1B Justin Howard, DH Ryan Honeycutt and CF Max Willett to trump Texas’ ace pitching staff in the final inning on Saturday afternoon.

New Mexico got things started with a two-run home run off the bat of Honeycutt in the first frame off Longhorn starter Brandon Workman after a two-out walk to C Rafael Neda.

Here is your Big 12 recap for February 20th:

New Mexico 6 #1 Texas 5

TexasTechPhoto AUSTIN, Texas – Down a run in the final inning to the No. 1 college baseball team in America. At their place! No big deal. These are Ray Birmingham Lobos, who step to the plate with no fear in their heart and fearsome bats in their hands.

What the Lobos/Davids of New Mexico kind of did Saturday in Austin was reach into a back pocket, pull out a slingshot and knock Goliath on his rear in a stunning 6-5 Lobo win.

The first stone out of the Lobo slingshot in the ninth was a Justin Howard solo homer that pushed New Mexico into a 5-all tie.

The Lobos then nailed the win off a Max Willett bomb to deep left field that scored true freshman Devon Conley from third.
