Big 12 Players of the Week

Brodie Greene (Texas A&M) has been tabbed the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Player of the Week, while Shawn Tolleson (Baylor) and Chad Bettis (Texas Tech) share Pitcher of the Week honors for games of Feb. 15-21, in voting by a panel of media covering the conference.  It is the first conference weekly accolade for Greene, and the second for both Tolleson and Bettis.

ACC Players of the Week

DallasPoulkNCState GREENSBORO, N.C. – NC State second baseman Dallas Poulk has been named the first Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week of the 2010 season, while Georgia Tech sophomore Jed Bradley has been named the conference’s Pitcher of the Week.

Conference USA Players of the Week

ToddMcInnisSouthernMiss Preseason Conference USA Pitcher of the Year Todd McInnis was in mid-season form on opening day, carrying a no-hitter into the fifth inning for Southern Miss to earn the first Pitcher of the Week honors of the 2010 season. UCF sophomore C Beau Taylor was productive at the plate all weekend long in a three-game sweep of Savannah State to earn Hitter of the Week recognition.

Big Ten Players of the Week

Jonathan Roof, Michigan State Jr., SS, Paducah, Ky./St. Mary’s

Roof earns his first career Player of the Week honor after leading Michigan State to a 2-1 start on the season with wins over Furman and Miami (Ohio). The junior hit for a .636 average with a 1.273 slugging percentage while reaching base at a .692 clip, combining for an OPS of 1.965. The shortstop opened the season with three hits, including an RBI double, a run and a stolen base, in Michigan State’s 8-6 win over Furman on Friday. The following day against No. 15 Clemson, he went 2-for-3 with a solo home run. In the weekend finale, Roof went 2-for-3 with another solo shot, two runs scored and a pair of walks as the Spartans took the game, 11-5. Roof becomes the first Spartan position player in over two years to be named Big Ten Player of the Week.

2010 CAA Preview

A new season of CAA baseball is already underway, with every team except James Madison and Northeastern having played thus far.

The conference had adopted a new playoff format as a way to cut costs, reducing the number of playoff teams from six to four, which is a shame since only two teams went into the final weekend last season having locked up playoff spots. Read the rest of this entry »

Fullerton’s Serrano suspended 3 Games

DaveSerrano Cal-State Fullerton head coach Dave Serrano has been suspended for three games after bumping umpire Larry Randall during an argument on Saturday night against Pepperdine. Big West senior associate commissioner Rob Halvaks stated the following about the rule: "It’s an NCAA rule: it’s an automatic three-game suspension if there is contact with an umpire, It cannot be appealed; there is no appeal process." Serrano began serving the suspension on Sunday afternoon missing the Titans victory over Long Beach State and will miss the first two games of the TCU series this upcoming weekend.

Storylines from February 21st

LoganDarnellUK Here are my Top Ten storylines for College Baseball action on February 21st.

1. Texas dropped another game to New Mexico to lose their opening series against the Lobos. You can check out William’s full article on the game by clicking here.

2. Oregon picked up their first loss of the season today at Pepperdine by a score of 11-7. Ducks starter Christian Jones gave up seven runs in his 3.1 innings of work putting them behind the eight ball early on.

3. Kentucky has started off 3-0 this season behind two strong weekend starts from junior LHP Logan Darnell and freshman Taylor Rogers. Darnell went six innings while allowing seven hits and allowing only two runs against nationally ranked Coastal Carolina. Rogers on the other hand went 7.2 shutout innings allowing six hits.

Pac-10 Weekend Recap (Feb. 19-21)

Mooneyham It was one heck of a weekend for the Pac-10. Coming off of a disastrous 2009 campaign in which only three teams qualified for a Regional and only one made it past the first weekend, the conference came out in a complete 180 in the 2010 season’s opening weekend. As a whole, the Pac-10 went 9-0 on Friday, 10-2 on Saturday and then 6-2 on Sunday for a weekend record of 25-4 with the opponent’s including Rice, Fullerton, Cal Poly, Long Beach St. and Hawaii. After three days of the 2010 season, no team has more than one loss.

FloridaRecap BATON ROUGE – Home runs by first baseman Blake Dean and catcher Micah Gibbs, along with a brilliant LSU debut by starting pitcher Joey Bourgeois led the second-ranked Tigers to a 4-0 shutout of Centenary Sunday afternoon in Alex Box Stadium.

With the series sweep, the Tigers (3-0) captured their 11th-straight season-opening series victory dating back to 2000. Centenary dropped to 0-3 with the loss.

The Tigers will be back in action Wednesday when they face in-state foe McNeese State at 4 p.m. in Alex Box Stadium.

SouthFloridaPic Freshman Mike Zunino (Cape Coral, Fla.) delivered a walk-off single down the right-field line in the 10th inning as No. 7 Florida (3-0) completed a sweep of USF (0-3), 7-6, on Sunday afternoon at McKethan Stadium. The Gators had rallied to force extra innings with three runs in the ninth, including the tying run on a two-out fielding error by sophomore shortstop Sam Mende.

Mountain West Recap for Feb. 21st

MountainWestConference COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico took two of three from top-ranked Texas, winning Sunday’s rubber match (3-1). Also on Sunday, No. 11 TCU completed a three-game sweep of Sam Houston State with a 15-2 triumph, while UNLV won the finale of a three-game series with Sacramento State (18-14).
