MarkPopeGT STATESBORO, Ga. – Sophomore Mark Pope combined with freshman Luke Bard for a four-hit shutout and the offense scored double-digit runs for the third straight game, as the No. 3 Georgia Tech baseball team defeated Georgia Southern, 10-0, Tuesday evening in Statesboro, Ga.

Tuesday’s shutout was Georgia Tech`s third in the first four games of the season, the most in school history after four games played. The three runs allowed through four games are tied for the fewest allowed to this point in school history.

Former Arkansas Tech Ryan White Passes Away

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – The Gulf South Conference lost a member of its baseball alumni Monday afternoon when former Arkansas Tech first baseman and Ouachita Baptist assistant coach Ryan White sadly lost his life in a single car accident near Hernando, Miss. He was 27 years old.

According to DeSoto County (Miss.) Coroner Jeff Pounders, White was traveling northbound on I-55 when his Nissan sport-utility vehicle left the east side of the road and rolled into the trees. He was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead on the scene. The son of Tommy and Jan White, Ryan lived in a familiar place for GSC fans, Southaven, Miss. The Conference hosts its basketball and softball tournaments in the city and the GSC Baseball Tournament is in Millington, Tenn., just 30 miles northeast

Auburn’s Justin Fradejas Injured

FradejesAuburn Auburn outfielder Justin Fradejas will be limited to pinch-running duties for the next couple of weeks as he got injured swinging the bat over the weekend during the series against Southeast Missouri. He is currently 1 for 3 on the year with that only hit being a home run.

Big 12 Recap for February 22nd

Fresno, Calif. – Freshmen Tom Lemke and Kurt Giller held a potent Fresno State in check, as Nebraska won the final game of the four-game series by a score of 4-1 Monday night at Beiden Field.

Lemke (1-0) tossed five shutout innings for his first career win, as the right-hander scattered five hits and struck out six in his Husker debut. Giller closed the door on NU’s first win of the season, going the final four innings for his first save, as he allowed one run on four hits.

• Was nearly unstoppable in the batter’s box, hitting at a blistering .750 clip with nine hits in 12 at-bats to help Tennessee record its first season-opening series sweep since 2004…Reached safely in 12 of 16 plate appearances for a .750 on-base percentage.
• Had three hits in each game of UT’s sweep over the Musketeers…Tallied four doubles and five singles over the weekend…Posted a tremendous 1.083 slugging percentage with 13 total bases…Walked three times and did not strike out.

Big East Players of the Week

Brian Streilein Villanova PROVIDENCE, R.I. - With 11 teams playing 33 games, the 2010 BIG EAST baseball season officially began last week. Coming from a pair of undefeated teams, Notre Dame senior first baseman Casey Martin was named BIG EAST Baseball Player of the Week and Villanova senior RHP Brian Streilein was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week.

WAC Players Of The Week

DENVER, CO – Nevada designated hitter Brock Stassi and New Mexico State pitcher Dan Reid have been named the Verizon Wireless Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for February 15-21.

Stassi, a junior from Yuba City, Calif. (Yuba City HS), helped the Wolf Pack to a 2-1 record last week at Santa Clara. Stassi hit .818 (9-for-11) with six runs scored, a double, two home runs and five RBI in three games. In one stretch, Stassi had hits in six consecutive plate appearances. He finished with multiple hits all three games. On the weekend, he had a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .875 on base percentage. Read the rest of this entry »

NCBWA Division 1 Poll (Feb. 22nd)

DALLAS – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association continues its tradition of NCAA Division I polls for the 13th year with its 2010 weekly surveys. Weekly polls will be circulated from Feb. 22-June 29 following the 64th annual NCAA World Series in Omaha, Neb., and final CWS competition at historic Rosenblatt Stadium.

The poll voters come from 40 college baseball writers and related media persons from throughout the nation. This week’s poll has representation by 11 different conferences among the 302 baseball-playing schools in the 2010 NCAA Division I ranks, and there have been 12 circuits in the initial surveys this season.
