#22 Oklahoma 12 Valparaiso 9

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — It wasn’t easy but the No. 20 Sooner baseball team improved to 5-0 with a 12-9 win over Valparaiso in game one of the Jacksonville Invitational on Friday.

Oklahoma led 9-3 after six frames as starter Zach Neal began with five solid innings, but the Crusaders rallied with six runs in the top of seventh.

However, senior captain Ross Hubbard paced a three-run affair in the bottom of the eighth after he delivered the go-ahead run on a RBI single for OU. The base knock broke a 9-9 tie and the Sooners later added another run in the frame off a wild pitch, and Kaleb Herren’s RBI double to center gave OU a three-run cushion.

Western Kentucky 5 #28 Texas A&M 1

WACO, Texas – Western Kentucky capitalized on five Texas A&M errors to defeat the Aggies, 5-1, Friday evening in the QTI Baylor Classic before 2,952 fans at Baylor Ballpark.

The Hilltoppers (3-1) scored four unearned runs off three Aggie miscues in the decisive fourth inning, building a 5-0 advantage en route to the victory. Texas A&M dropped to 3-2 with the loss.

"This was a disappointing loss," A&M coach Rob Childress said. "I like the effort and the attitude with which we played, but we’ve got to play better and execute better."

WKU got on the board in the last half of the second. After a one-out single through the right side by Jake Wells, Casey Dykes hit a tailing liner into right field that got over the head of Tyler Naquin and up against the wall to put runners at second and third with one out. The next batter, Kory Petri, chopped a ball to third base that scored Dykes to give the Hilltoppers an early 1-0 lead.

Missouri 4 Florida Atlantic 2

AUBURN, Ala.- – Mizzou claimed its third-straight win with a 4-2 victory over Florida Atlantic in the opener of the Auburn Classic on Friday in Auburn, Ala. In the first ever meeting between the two teams, the Tigers scored all of their runs in the first and last innings of the game.

Missouri (3-1) put the first runs of the game on the board with two runs in the top of the first inning. Freshman Brannon Champagne led off the game with a single and later scored on a base hit by junior Brett Nicholas. Nicholas would cross the plate when senior Aaron Senne doubled to drive in his fifth run on the year.

Champagne was on base three times in the game, as he went 2-for-3 and was hit by a pitch. He also added a stolen base, but was injured on his slide into second base and had to leave the game.

FAU’s Andy Mee led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a home run to cut the Tigers’ lead in half.

Nebraska 21 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 9

Houston, Texas – The Nebraska baseball team enjoyed its best offensive effort in six seasons, as the Huskers broke out the bats in a 21-9 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday afternoon at the Rice Invitational.

Kyle Bubak and Tyler Farst both put together career afternoons, as Nebraska’s 21 runs were the most since scoring 22 on Kent State in 2004. Bubak led Nebraska’s (2-3) 19-hit attack with a career-high five hits, including a pair of doubles, and scored four times. Bubak’s five hits and four runs scored were career bests, and his five-hit afternoon was the first by a Husker since Jeff Tezak in 2007.

Farst matched his career best with five RBIs, including a three-run homer that broke open a two-run game in the top of the fourth inning. Farst, who did not drive in a run at Fresno State, matched his personal best set against Northern Colorado last March. Cody Asche also drove in three runs, while freshman Chad Christensen added a pair of RBIs, including his first career homer, in his Husker debut.

PEORIA, Ariz. – Junior outfielder Brian Heere collected a pair of hits and saved a run with a diving catch in the fourth inning, while senior pitcher Brett Bollman scattered seven hits over 6 2/3 innings to earn his first win of the season as Kansas tipped Sacramento State 4-3 Friday afternoon at the Peoria Sports Complex.

The 25th-ranked Jayhawks improved to 2-1 on the young season, while the Hornets evened their record at 2-2.

For the third consecutive game, KU received a strong starting pitching performance as Brett Bollman held the Hornets to just one earned run on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings with a walk and three strikeouts. He mixed a cut fastball with a curve and a changeup to keep the Sacramento State hitters off-balance.

Baylor 3 Texas State 2

WACO, Texas – Gregg Glime’s eighth-inning sacrifice fly broke a 2-2 tie, and Brooks Pinckard worked a perfect ninth to notch his third save in as many games as Baylor knocked off Texas State 3-2 in the opening game of the QTI Baylor Classic Friday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.

The Bears (4-1) have trailed at some point in all five games this season, but this was the first time Baylor got on the board first.

After starting pitcher Shawn Tolleson struck out two in a perfect top half of the first, Logan Vick and Joey Hainsfurther led off with consecutive singles to put runners on the corners with no outs in the bottom half of the inning.

Texas State (3-1) starter Michael Russo got Max Muncy to ground into a double play, but Vick scored on the play, giving Baylor a 1-0 lead.

Washington State 6 Texas Tech 3

LUBBOCK, Texas – Washington State erased a 3-2 deficit with a four-run outburst in the eighth inning to hand Texas Tech its first loss of the season by final of 6-3 on Friday afternoon in the second day of the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic at Dan Law Field.

The loss is Tech’s first of season as the Red Raiders drop to 5-1 overall while Washington State remains perfect after a doubleheader sweep in today’s tournament (defeated Bethune-Cookman 10-4 earlier in the day) and stands at 4-0.

Texas Tech clung to a one-run lead in the top of the eighth inning with starter Bobby Doran still in the game but a leadoff walk quickly sent the Red Raiders to their bullpen for closer Jay Johnson. Johnson hit Cougar first baseman Ryan Peterson on the first pitch he delivered and Patrick Claussen followed up with perfect bunt single down the third base line that loaded the bases with no outs. Pinch hitter Matt Fanelli tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right and then the floodgates opened for the Cougars. Shortstop Shea Vucinich drove in the go-ahead run with a double off the wall in right-center and second baseman Cody Bartlett delivered the knockout punch with a two-run single up the middle that gave the Cougars the 6-3 lead.
