#3 Virginia 6 #16 East Carolina 2

DannyHultzenUVA GREENVILLE, N.C. – The No. 2 Virginia baseball team opened the 2010 season strong with a 6-2 victory over No. 11 East Carolina Friday afternoon in front of 5,012 fans at Clark-LeClair Stadium in Greenville, N.C. After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Cavaliers rallied by scoring six unanswered runs over the final six innings.

Danny Hultzen (So., Bethesda, Md.) had a big day at the plate and on the mound for Virginia. Hultzen earned the win and went six strong innings as UVa’s starting pitcher, allowing two earned runs, four hits and three walks while striking out four. After a shaky opening inning where he allowed both runs as well as two walks, Hultzen settled down to surrender just two hits and a walk over the final five innings. At the plate, Hultzen added two hits, including a double, and scored twice.

East Carolina Recap

#6 Florida State 11 Georgia State 3

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Fifth-ranked Florida State (1-0) started the 2010 season on the right foot thanks to an 11-3 victory over Georgia State (0-1) Friday night on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium. The Seminoles fought back from an early two-run deficit rattling off nine unanswered runs en route to their 12th victory in a row on opening day.

Senior Stephen Cardullo picked up where he left off following his junior All-American season by going 2-for-2 with a double, two runs scored, two walks and four RBI. Mike McGee also turned in a fine performance collecting a pair of hits including his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth. The junior left fielder finished the game with two runs and three RBI.

#9 Georgia Tech 4 Missouri State 0

ATLANTA – Sixth-ranked Georgia Tech gets leadoff home runs from senior Tony Plagman and junior Jeff Rowland, combined with a five-hit performance by pitcher Deck McGuire en route to a 4-0 win over Missouri State in the season opener Friday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.

"It was a clean game, both starters really pitched well," head coach Danny Hall said. "We had to battle hard on [Aaron] Meade. Jeff Rowland starting the game with a home run was big for us, gave us at least a little cushion, and then Tony [Plagman] had a big hit there late and gave us even more cushion. All told, it was a great start."

#12 Miami 12 Rutgers 1

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Junior left-hander Eric Erickson tossed 5 2/3 effective innings in his first start in nearly two years and sophomore third baseman Harold Martinez smacked two deep homers to left as No. 12 Miami defeated Rutgers, 12-1, in the season opener for both teams Friday night at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.

Erickson (1-0), who was pitching for the first time since June 16, 2008 after missing last year recovering from Tommy John surgery, allowed just two hits and one unearned run while striking out six in 5 2/3 innings of work to earn the win.

#13 North Carolina 6 George Washington 5

CHAPEL HILL, N.C – No. 11 North Carolina scored two runs in the bottom of the tenth to rally past George Washington Friday in front of 1193 fans at Boshamer Stadium. A wild pitch gave the Diamond Heels their first lead of the game and the win 6-5 in extra innings. Five of the six Tar Heel runs were scored with two outs. The Tar Heels improve to 1-0 on the young season, while the Colonials fall to 0-1.

A 1-for-4 and two RBI performance from Jesse Wierzbicki led the Diamond Heels, which included his first home run as a Tar Heel. Mike Cavasinni kept the rally alive with a two-out infield single in the tenth, to earn a 2-for-5 performance on the day. Cavasinni extends his seven-game hit streak that dates back to last year, which matches his career-best.

#14 Clemson 11 Miami (OH) 0

Clemson, SC – Will Lamb went 4-for-4 and hit his first career home run to lead #15 Clemson to an 11-0 victory over Miami (OH) in front of 5,915 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Friday afternoon. The Tigers improved to 1-0, while the RedHawks fell to 0-1. It was the first meeting between the two teams since 1965.

Lamb, who made his first career start at first base, totaled four hits, three runs, and three RBIs, all career-highs, to lead the Tigers’ 13-hit attack. Kyle Parker had two hits, including a three-run homer, and Jeff Schaus added three RBIs.

Wake Forest 6 Army 2

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. Sophomore pitcher Austin Stadler allowed just one run over six strong innings and tied a career high with seven strikeouts, while Mike Murray and Mac Williamson each drove in two runs to lead the Demon Deacons to a 6-2 win against Army in the 2010 season opener on Friday night at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.

Wake Forest moves to 1-0 on the young season, while Army falls to 1-1, after defeating Dayton 14-6 earlier in the day.

Stadler (1-0), a junior from Midlothian, Va., was sharp in the first start of his sophomore season. Stadler threw six sharp innings, giving up just one run on five hits. He tied a career high with seven strikeouts, while walking just one.

Boston College 8 Tulane 5

NEW ORLEANS – Junior Pat Dean worked 7.0 innings on the mound and sophomore Anthony Melchionda drove in a career-high four RBI to lead the Boston College baseball team to a season opening 8-5 win against Tulane at Turchin Stadium.

Dean allowed two runs on six hits, struck out eight and walked just one. He retired 12-straight batters between the second and fifth innings.

Baylor 9 Duke 3

WACO, Texas – Shawn Tolleson struck out 11 batters and allowed just three runs in 6.0 innings to pick up the win as Baylor baseball opened the 2010 season with a 9-3 win over Duke Friday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.

Tolleson allowed three runs on three hits in the first inning, but held the Blue Devils scoreless on two hits over the next five frames. The Baylor offense quickly answered with two runs in the bottom of the first.

NC State 32 LaSalle 3

RALEIGH, N.C. – This should have been a first-round TKO, but no one bothered to stop the fight. NC State scored 10 runs in the first inning and seven in the second and just kept on scoring en route to a 32-3 rout of La Salle that was not as close as the final score indicated.

The Wolfpack set a new school record for runs in a game, breaking the old mark of 29, set March 29, 1984, against Wake Forest.

Florida International 10 Maryland 3

MIAMI – The FIU Golden Panthers opened the 2010 season in impressive fashion by belting 14 hits and scoring 10 runs in a 10-3 victory over the Maryland Terrapins Friday night at the FIU Baseball Stadium.

"We feel like we’ve got more than nine guys to do the job out there," said Head Coach Turtle Thomas. "Throughout the order, everyone contributed in some way."

The Terrapins came out strong and silenced the crowd early when they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning on a couple of singles by UMD’s Mike Rozak and Jack Cleary.

Kentucky 15 Virginia Tech 6

CONWAY, S.C. — Preseason All-American second baseman Chris Bisson went 4-for-5 with a walk, two doubles and a stolen base and right-hander Alex Meyer struck out eight in five innings, as Kentucky posted a 15-6, season-opening win over Virginia Tech, Friday afternoon at Coastal Carolina’s Charles Watson Stadium and Vrooman Field.
"We feel great about getting the first win," UK head coach Gary Henderson said. "It is hard to put it into words, you practice for five weeks, feel like you are ready about two weeks ago, then you get an opportunity to play. It is a huge win for us."
