drew-pomeranz-photo Welcome to my yearly Pre-season 2010 college baseball top 100 (draft eligible) players. This list is not meant to be a prediction of draft position, although in some sense it wont be too far off. My list is more about who I think will have more success at the next level. This is not a science. It is purely my opinion after watching video, talking to scouts and scouting some of the players personally. This is the pre-season list which in all honesty shouldn’t really even be attempted. A chunk of these players wont even be in the story by years end and many others will need to be included. This list is purely a vehicle to make you aware of what the college landscape and the MLB draft might look like. I will do this all over again after the college season is over. Questions and comments can be emailed to bkmhoxx@sunflower.com and you can also find me on Twitter @bkmhoxx. Enjoy.

24. Tyler Holt – Florida St., Outfield

Gap power, patient/disciplined hitter, plus speed, leadoff guy

23. Justin Grimm – Georgia, Right handed pitcher

94-96 FB, good body, athletic, improving CB, decent CH, needs time

22. Kyle Blair – San Diego, Right handed pitcher

Good size, big frame, low 90’s FB, good CB & CH

21. Jedd Gyorko – West Virginia ss/3b

Good hitter, power, plate discipline, great bat speed, utility type

20. Sam Dyson – South Carolina, Right handed pitcher

94-97 straight FB, good CB, Tommy John survivor, command/control issues, future bullpen stud?

19. Todd Cunningham – Jacksonville St., Outfield

Great bat, good avg., quick bat, very little power, good defense, good speed, leadoff stud

18. Jarrett Parker – Virginia, Outfield

Huge power, 5 tools, inconsistent swing, patient hitter, Brett Jackson comps

17. Brett Eibner – Arkansas, Outfield/Right handed pitcher

Physically gifted, power, strong arm, 2 way player, low 90’s FB, good cutter, decent CH, good command

16. James Paxton – Kentucky, Left handed pitcher

92-97 sinking FB, plus plus slurve 80-83, good body, low ¾ delivery, health and eligibility concerns, future closer?

15. Chad Bettis – Texas Tech, Right handed pitcher

90-94 FB, plus slider, true closer

14. Kevin Jacob – Georgia Tech, Right handed pitcher

Mid 90’s FB, big arm, big body, plus CB, command issues, prototypical closer

13. Alex Wimmers – Ohio St., Right handed pitcher

Low 90’s FB, K guy with a killer CB, athletic

12. Rick Hague – Rice, SS

Solid hitter, excellent fielder, may need a move to 3b one day

Raw power, great bat speed, excellent bat command, plus arm, very high ceiling, corner OF or 1b

A top infielder, range, hands & arm, hits to all fields, good bat control, good speed, some power

Mid 90’s FB, very good CB, avg. CH, big body, questions on throwing motion, Zito comps

4. LeVon Washington – Chipola JC, Outfield/2b

Good hitter, plus speed, leadoff stud, elite defensive CF if his arm is ok, if not 2b would fit him well

3. Deck McGuire – Georgia Tech, Right handed pitcher

Low 90’s sinking FB, very good CB, good CH, control issues at times, iffy mechanics

2. Bryce Harper – Southern Nevada CC, Catcher

Huge power, huge arm, MLB body & tools, avg. speed, excellent mechanics, Position? Hype? Price?

1. Anthony Ranaudo – LSU, Right handed pitcher

91-94 FB, nasty CB, great command, very polished, deceptive, ready for MLB soon

Sleepers:

This is a small group of sleepers. Many of these will sneak into the top 100 or even top 50 by years end and many of these will drop to much lower into the draft. Just because I don’t include someone in the sleeper list does not mean that I don’t know of them, respect their offerings or think that they have a chance to be a top 5-10 round pick. To be correct in the matter, a sleeper list for the draft should probably include a couple hundred names but for the sake of this list i am just picking a select few that I personally like or have heard something positive about.

I’m very surprised you don’t have Michigan’s Ryan Lamarre anywhere on the top 100 or sleepers. Preseason 3rd team All American, seen reports of him going as high as the top 40 in the draft, good season in the cape…
