NCAA schools propose changes to current baseball scheduling

NCAAPhoto After last season’s changes to the schedule for NCAA baseball teams, a proposal has been raised to add a 14th week onto the beginning of the scheduling period to allow an easement from the already cramped 56-game schedule the NCAA allows.

The proposal, sponsored by Conference USA, is opposed by a group comprised solely of schools in the North, including all eleven schools in the Big 10. The opposition suggest a 14th week added at the end of the season, after spring classes are finished.

East Tennessee State releases 2010 Schedule

ETSUPhoto JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Road trips to Charleston, S.C.and Eugene, Ore., in addition to 30 home contests are all on tap for the 2010 ETSU baseball team, as head coach Tony Skole and his staff released their schedule Monday afternoon.

“We are excited for the upcoming season,” Skole said. “We have made a lot of great progress this fall and winter.  Although we are still very young with only one senior, we have a lot of experience in our youth.   We return a strong nucleus and have many new players that we will be relying upon to have an immediate impact."

CBB Interview with Greg DiCenzo (Holy Cross)

Coach DiCenzo The College Baseball Blog continues our series of interviews with coaches from around the country today with Holy Cross head coach Greg DiCenzo. He is entering his third season with the Crusaders bringing them to the Patriot League tournament and winning over 20 games in each of the past two seasons. The 20 victories in a season was the first time the Crusaders had reached that plateau in back to back seasons since 1922-1923. DiCenzo came over to Holy Cross after spending five seasons with Northeastern where he served as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.

Top 100 Countdown: Number 15 Kevin Jacob (Georgia Tech)

KevinJacobGT The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 15 in our countdown with junior RHP Kevin Jacob from Georgia Tech. He is a 6’6 228 pound right hander from Baltimore Maryland where he attended Parkville High School. As a senior in high school, he went 9-2 with a 0.45 ERA while holding opponents to a .112 batting average. He was honored as a first-team all-metro by the Baltimore Sun and an All-American by Louisville Slugger. In 2006, Baseball America rated him the fourth best player in the state.

VMI adds three for 2010-2011 Season

VMI Baseball LEXINGTON, Va.- Head coach Marlin Ikenberry and his coaching staff have announced the early signings of three players to the VMI Baseball Class of 2014.  Each of the three hail from the Commonwealth, as the class consists of Connor Bach (Clifton, Va./Centreville), Berkley Hawkins (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) and Campbell Henkel (Richmond, Va./ St. Christopher’s).

LSU tops 2009 Attendance Figures

NewAlexBoxStadium The LSU Tigers won another title this week when the NCAA released the 2009 Attendance Numbers. LSU averaged 9,611 fans per game last season on their way to the 2009 College World Series title. Arkansas finished in second place with an average of 7,906 while Ole Miss finished third with an average of 7,003. The rest of the top five is rounded out by two more SEC teams with South Carolina averaging 6,805 and Mississippi State averaging 6,301. You can check out the rest of the top 50 below.

Ole Miss adds two for 2010-2011 Season

OleMissPhoto OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss baseball program added a pair of junior college players to its signing class with the signing of Tanner Bailey and Les Smith, head coach Mike Bianco announced on Tuesday.

The pair are the latest announced signees, joining previously announced signees Will Allen, Austin Anderson, Ryan Bolden, Nathan Foriest, Casey Greene, Austin Hartzog, Jimel Judon, Casey Mulholland, Mike Mayers, Preston Overbey, Jordan Poole, Bobby Wahl and Gabe Woods.

Central Michigan adds Brett Haring to Coaching Staff

CMUPhoto MOUNT PLEASANT – Head coach Steve Jaksa announced the hiring of Brett Haring as an assistant coach with the Central Michigan baseball program.

Haring spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Northwood University, working with the Timberwolves’ pitching staff. While at Northwood, Haring also spent time as the recruiting coordinator and as the team’s hitting instructor. In 2009, he helped the Timberwolves to their first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship Game in program history.

UCF adds Brandon Romans to Coaching Staff

BrandonRomans ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) – UCF head baseball coach Terry Rooney announced Tuesday that former Knight Brandon Romans was named the program’s volunteer assistant coach. A native of Cocoa, Fla., Romans played three seasons with the Black and Gold, hitting .314 for his career with 17 home runs and 77 RBI.

“I am extremely excited about the addition of Brandon Romans to our coaching staff,” said Rooney. “Brandon was a tremendous collegiate player and understands the expectations of this program. To have another alum on our staff means a great deal to me. Due to his diverse playing background, he will assist in a variety of on-field areas, while serving as our camp coordinator.”

Stony Brook releases 2010 Schedule

ChadMarshallStonyBrook Stony Brook, N.Y. – Contests against three 2009 NCAA Tournament participants including Alabama highlight the 2010 schedule for the Stony Brook University baseball team, as released on Tuesday by head coach Matt Senk.

Stony Brook opens the season with a neutral site game at UNC Wilmington against Akron on Friday, March 5. The Seawolves play UNCW the next day before playing both Akron and UNCW on March 7.

2010 CBB Season Preview: ACC Atlantic Division

The College Baseball Blog continues our 2010 Season Previews with the ACC Atlantic Division. The Florida State Seminoles won the division last year with a 19-9 record while Clemson finished in second place with a 19-11 record. Boston College finished in third place with a 13-15 record while Maryland and NC State tied for fourth place with 10-20 records. Wake Forest finished in last place with a 6-24 record.
