Top 100 Countdown: Number 7 James Paxton (Kentucky)

JamesPaxtonHeadshot The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 8 in our countdown with senior LHP James Paxton from Kentucky. He is from Ladner, British Columbia and attended Delta Secondary School. As a senior, he earned a 1.70 ERA, a 7-1 record, with 65 strikeouts and 32 walks while pitching 50 innings. He also had a solid junior season as he notched a 1.51 ERA, winning 10 games and striking out 100 in 78 innings pitched.

College Baseball Player having success with Poker

EricBaldwin Former Wisconsin-Whitewater outfielder Eric Baldwin was recently named 2009 CardPlayer Magazine’s Player of the Year. Baldwin played for UW-Whitewater from 2002-2005 finishing his college career as a member of the Division 3 National Championship team. He decided to follow his dream after that season to play poker professionally which worked out well over the last year as he made 17 final tables during 2009.

Johnson looking to break into FSU Lineup

ShermanJohnson Casey Moore of the Tallahassee Democrat recently wrote an excellent feature on Florida State infielder Sherman Johnson who is looking to break into the everyday lineup for the Seminoles. Johnson last season appeared in 28 games with a .476 batting average with a home run and 10 RBIs. He had a big game against Ohio State in the Tallahassee Regional where he went 2 for 4 with a double, triple, two runs and two RBIs as the Noles cruised to a 37-6 victory.

Sacred Heart adds four for 2010-2011 Season

SacredHeart FAIRFIELD, CT – Sacred Heart baseball coach Nick Giaquinto announced the signing of four players to National Letters of Intent (NLI) for the 2011 season. The group includes a pair of switch-hitting catchers and two right handed pitchers.

Two of the players, Dan Perez and Kody Kerski, are both Connecticut natives, while Derick Horn and Robbie Maguire are from New York State.

2010 California Media Day Announced

Print CALIFORNIA– Two dozen teams make up the Division-I college baseball landscape, bolstering Hall of Fame players, Cy Young Award winners and collegiate national championships.

For the first time in state history, teams from around the state will be a part in the Easton California College Baseball Media Day, January 22 at ESPN Zone in Downtown Disney and January 26 at Stanford University. Each day of the event-series will begin at 9 a.m.

We continue the list today with number 8 in our countdown with senior first baseman Blake Dean from LSU. He is from Crestview Florida where he attended Crestview High School where he was a four year letterwinner. He was named a High School All-American in his senior season by Louisville Slugger. He also was named second-team 5A all-state as a pitcher in his junior season while being named second-team 5A all-state recognition as a sophomore.

KR: New Coaches Looking to Impress

ErikBakich Kendall Rogers of Rivals.com recently ranked the new coaching hires from across the country. He ranks Tom Walter as the best coaching hire which I disagree with somewhat. I think the best hire in the country was at Maryland as they picked up Erik Bakich from Vanderbilt. Bakich was the heart and soul of the Vanderbilt program in bringing in some great players like Pedro Alvarez and David Price.

Albany releases 2010 Schedule

AlbanyBaseball Albany, N.Y. – Vice President and Director of Athletics Lee McElroy announced the 2010 University at Albany baseball schedule on Tuesday afternoon. The Great Danes, who returned to the America East Conference Championship last season after winning the league title in 2007, will compete in a tournament at Coastal Carolina and make a six-game trip to California to highlight the non-conference schedule. UAlbany will also play an America East Conference schedule against five league opponents.

Top 100 Countdown: Number 9 Alex Wimmers (Ohio State)

AlexWimmersHeadshot The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 9 in our countdown with junior RHP Alex Wimmers from Ohio State. He is from Cincinnati Ohio and graduated from Archbishop Moeller High School. He played for two seasons under Mike Cameron, who retired after the 2007 season as the winningest baseball coach in Ohio high school history. He had an excellent senior season as he has an ERA of 0.89 with 80 strikeouts in 55 innings while finishing his high school career with 1.20 ERA and 143 strikeouts in 105 innings.

Mike Benjamin added to Arizona State Staff

MikeBenjaminASU TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State University baseball has named former Sun Devil baseball player Mike Benjamin as an assistant coach, head coach Tim Esmay announced today. Benjamin played two seasons at Arizona State before moving on to a career in the Major Leagues.

Benjamin joins Travis Jewett and Ken Knutson on Esmay’s coaching staff for the 2010 season.

CBB 2010 Season Preview: SEC East Division

SECLogo The College Baseball Blog continues our series of Conference Previews today with the SEC’s Eastern Division. Florida won the division last year with a 19-11 record while South Carolina finished in second place with a 17-13 record. Georgia finished in third place with a 15-15 record while Vanderbilt finished 12-17 to grab the final spot in the SEC Tournament. Both Kentucky and Tennessee missed the SEC Tournament in 2009 after finishing with 12-18 and 11-19 records. We will be previewing the other division of the SEC in the coming days. Baseball Mugs The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 10 in our countdown with junior third baseman Tony Thompson from Kansas. He is from Reno, Nevada and attended Galena High School. He picked up four letters playing under Gary McNamara. He had an excellent first three seasons in high school hitting .490 with 23 home runs and 83 RBI while also picking up a 16-7 record with a 3.41 ERA in 27 appearances on the mound.
