Marist releases 2010 Schedule

MaristBaseball POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist Athletics Department released the 2010 schedule for the baseball team on Tuesday. The Red Foxes have 54 games on the regular-season schedule, which will begin on Feb. 19 with a three-game series at James Madison. Marist will have 18 home games at McCann Baseball Field.

CBB Interview with Indiana’s Tracy Smith

TracySmithIndiana The College Baseball Blog continues our series of interviews with coaches around the nation today with Indiana head coach Tracy Smith. He is entering his fifth year in charge of the Hoosiers program after spending the previous nine seasons with Miami (OH). Smith led the Hoosiers to the Big Ten Tournament title for the program’s first conference title in 13 seasons. SWAC Tourney moves to Shreveport

FairGrounds The 2010 Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament will be played at Shreveport, LA’s Fair Grounds Field, Commissioner Duer Sharp announced today.

This year’s tournament will be played May 26-30, with the top four teams in each of the SWAC’s Eastern and Western Divisions qualifying for Conference postseason play.

The SWAC Baseball Tournament returns to Fair Grounds Field for the first time since 2002. The park is home of the Shreveport-Bossier Captains of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball

Top 100 Countdown: Number 2 Bryce Brentz (Middle Tennessee State)

BryceBrentzMTSU The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 2 in our countdown with junior outfielder/RHP Bryce Brentz from Middle Tennessee State. He is from Knoxville, Tennessee and attended South Doyle High School. His high school career saw him bat .417 while hitting 11 home runs and driving in 67 runs. He was named a Preseason All-American by Baseball Factory and Team One in 2007. At the end of his senior season, he was named All-State and All-District. The Cleveland Indians selected him in the 30th round of the 2007 draft but could not come to terms with him.

2010 CAA Preseason Poll

2010 Big West Preseason Poll

ChristianColonCSF Following a season that once again concluded in Omaha, Neb., at the College World Series, Cal State Fullerton was selected to capture the 2010 Big West Baseball Championship, a title they lost to UC Irvine last season, according to the Big West Conference preseason poll conducted by the league’s nine head coaches. The Titans, who have claimed at least a share of seven of the last 11 titles and a conference-best 14, nabbed seven first-place votes for a total of 79 points and were followed by defending conference championship UC Irvine, who picked up two first-place votes en route to a 71 point total. Rounding out the top three were the Cal Poly Mustangs, sitting third with 60 points.

CBB Interview with Tim Sinicki (Binghamton)

TimSinickiBinghamton The College Baseball continues our series of interviews with head coaches from around the nation today with Binghamton head coach Tim Sinicki. He is entering his 18th season with the Bearcats as he has seen them transition from a Division 3 program into a Division 1 team. Binghamton made the school’s first appearance in the Division 1 NCAA Tournament last season after winning the America East postseason tournament.

Top 100 Countdown: Number 3 Zack Cox (Arkansas)

Cox,Zack web The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 3 in our countdown with sophomore infielder/RHP Zack Cox from Arkansas. He is from Louisville Kentucky and attended Pleasure Ridge Park High School  where he had an outstanding career both at the plate and on the mound. He had a career batting average of .449 while hitting 33 home runs. On the mound, he was even better with a 38-3 record with a 1.03 ERA and 495 strikeouts over 300 innings. He was named an Under Armour, Rawlings and Louisville Slugger All-American while being named Mr. Baseball in Kentucky as a senior. He was selected in the 20th round by the LA Dodgers but decided to head to Arkansas.

Division 2 Season Cut Short in 2011

NCAALogo Aaron Fitt of Baseball America is reporting that the NCAA Division 2 schools have voted by a 3/4 majority to cut the season from 56 games down to 50. This is an interesting development as it lessens the effects of increased travel for the schools and cuts down opportunities for the student athletes.

Clemson’s Team of the Decade

KhalilGreeneClemson The State in South Carolina recently put together the Clemson Tigers team of the decade. The Tigers played in the College World Series three times in 2000, 2002, and 2006. The team is led by current MLB shortstop Khalil Greene who was ACC Player of the Year and first-team All-American in 2002. Also on the team is Tyler Colvin who made his Major League Baseball debut last season.

Live Chats?

I am in the process of setting up the Live Chat schedule for the 2010 season and want to have some feedback on what is the best time for our readers. I have scheduled the season preview Live Chat on Monday Feb. 8th at 12 noon eastern time. I plan to run a chat every Monday and Friday starting on February 15th until the end of the College World Series. Is Monday’s at noon and Friday’s at noon the best days for you? We can also do Sunday evenings for the Weekend Recap if that works better. I am able to be flexible so the consensus wins. Leave your comments in the section below.

Elon spearheads “Pinch Hit for Haiti”

ElonPhoenix The Elon Baseball Program announced recently that they are sponsoring a fundraising program for the victims of the Haiti earthquake that hit the country a few days ago. I just took a look at the figures from the website can’t believe they have raised less then $2,000. (IT SHOULD BE HIGHER) I challenge our loyal readers to raise this total in the coming weeks.
