NCBWA Names Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List

STOPPEROFTHEYEAR Irvine, Calif. (NCBWA) — Forty players have been named to the initial watch list for the sixth annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball, as announced by the association Thursday.

Last year’s Stopper of the Year winner, Addison Reed of San Diego State, headlines the list of preseason nominees for the 2010 award. Reed recorded a nation-leading 20 saves in 20 opportunities last season, finished the year with a microscopic 0.65 earned run average and 38 strikeouts over his 27.2 innings of work. He allowed only seven walks, with two of those being intentional passes and his save total was a new San Diego State and Mountain West Conference season record.

2010 ACC Preseason Coaches Poll

Ga Tech’s Skole and Plagman talk to WREK Report

GTPlagman Kyle Tait from The Ramblin’ WREK Report recently sat down with Georgia Tech senior first baseman Tony Plagman and Sophomore third baseman Matt Skole. They discuss the upcoming 2010 season for the Yellow Jackets. Skole and Plagman also discuss how important their experience in the Cape Cod Baseball league was to their development and how they got the nickname of Bash Brothers.

2010 MEAC Preseason Coaches Poll

MEACLogo The MEAC Conference announced its 2010 pre-season baseball award winners on Wednesday. The B-CU Wildcats were named the unanimous pick to win the team championship for a fifth straight season.

Wildcat sophomore LHP Ali Simpson was named the pre-season pitcher of the year and senior C. J. Lauriello was named the co-player of the year in the voting by conference head baseball coaches and sports information directors.

Texas State extends Ty Harrington’s Contract

TyHarringtonTxState San Marcos, Texas- – Texas State athletic director Larry Teis announced that the contract for head baseball coach Ty Harrington has been extended for three more seasons.

"Ty has proven he is committed to winning both on and off the field," Teis said. "In today’s environment, the NCAA has made academic achievement a top priority, and Ty has bought into this philosophy. He is a great ambassador for Texas State."

Baseball America releases Preseason Top 25

Baseball America has published their Top 25 for the 2010 Season. They have put Texas in the top spot with Virginia coming in at number 2. They have put defending national champion LSU in the third spot. Cal-State Fullerton and Rice round out the Top 25. I have posted the rest of the Top 25 below.

CBB 2010 Season Preview: SEC Western Division

The College Baseball Blog continues our series of conference previews today with the SEC Western Division. LSU and Ole Miss tied for the Division Title with identical 20-10 records. Alabama finished in third place at 18-11. Arkansas finished at 14-15 to come in fourth place while Auburn (11-19) and Mississippi State (9-20) finished in fifth and sixth place respectively. Maine adds Cather to Coaching Staff

BillyCather ORONO, Maine — University of Maine baseball coach Steve Trimper announced recently that Billy Cather (Worcester, Mass.) will serve as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2010 season. Cather, Maine’s centerfielder for the past three years, wrapped up a standout career for the Black Bears in 2009.

2010 Big South Preseason Coaches Poll

CoastalCarolina CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – For the third consecutive year, Coastal Carolina University‘s baseball team has been voted the Big South Conference’s preseason favorite by the League’s Head Baseball Coaches, it was announced today by the Conference office.  In addition, the coaches voted Chanticleers’ junior outfielder Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla.) the Conference’s Preseason Player of the Year and Coastal Carolina junior Cody Wheeler (Spotsylvania, Va.) the League’s Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

Riley Cooper to focus on Football

RileyCooperFlorida Florida Wide Receiver Riley Cooper has decided to focus on his football career instead of playing baseball. Cooper was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 25th round of the 2009 MLB Draft and was set to take his physical on Jan. 17th as he put it on hold throughout the football season. Last season, Riley started 23 games in right field and two in center field while batting .247 with 16 runs, eight walks, eight RBI and five doubles in 30 games. Riley also played this summer in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Cotuit Kettleers where he played in three games recording only a walk in five at-bats.

Lehigh prepares for 2010 Season

LehighBaseball BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The first month of the New Year is almost officially in the books and that could only mean one thing; the college baseball season is right around the corner. The Lehigh baseball team will officially kick off practice January 29 in preparation for its season opener on February 26. The Mountain Hawks return several players from last season and everyone is excited to get back to work.

“There is a long layover after the winter break until we start practicing,” senior Ken Longernecker said. “The first day of practice is always fun and as a whole I expect the intensity level to be very high. Everyone is really excited and I expect a real positive atmosphere.”
