Top 100 Countdown: Number 5 Drew Pomeranz (Ole Miss)

DrewPomeranzOleMissHeadShot The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 5 in our countdown with Ole Miss junior LHP Drew Pomeranz. He is from Collierville, Tennessee and attended Collierville High School. He picked up four letters playing under head coach Jeff Hopkins. He posted a career record of 20-6 with 11 saves and a 2.21 ERA while striking out 312 and walking 91 in 181.0 IP. He picked up several awards including being named a finalist for Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Tennessee as a senior, three-time All-Region selection (2005, 2006, 2007), three-time Best of the Preps selection by the Commercial Appeal (2005, 2006, 2007), named a Louisville Slugger All-America selection as a junior in 2006, and named a preseason Louisville Slugger All-America selection as a senior in 2007.

 

Pomeranz had a solid freshman season when he made 17 appearances including making 11 starts. He accumulated a 4-3 record as he struck out 81 and walked 30 Drew Pomeranz Action Photo with a 4.16 ERA in 71.1 innings of work. After the season, he was named Freshman All-America and All-SEC Freshman selection.

He became a fixture in the Rebels rotation as he made 16 starts on the season with an 8-4 record and a team-leading 3.40 ERA. He walked 37 batters while striking out 124 in 95.1 innings of work. He held opponents to a .237 batting average against. In the NCAA Regional, he pitched eight innings against Monmouth before coming back on two days rest against Western Kentucky where he pitched a complete game striking out 16 batters and allowing only two hits. He was named All-SEC Second Team.

Pomeranz spent the summer of 2009 with the USA Collegiate National Team where he made five starts going 4-1 with an ERA of 1.75 as he struck out 48 batters in 25.2 innings. Baseball America rated him the seventh best prospect on the team.

Yeah, he’s a great pitcher. But won’t be for long if the Ole Miss coaches don’t stop throwing him to 2 starts a week like they did multiple times last season – his arm will fall off. Literally.
