The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.
We continue the list today with number 9 in our countdown with junior RHP Alex Wimmers from Ohio State. He is from Cincinnati Ohio and graduated from Archbishop Moeller High School. He played for two seasons under Mike Cameron, who retired after the 2007 season as the winningest baseball coach in Ohio high school history. He had an excellent senior season as he has an ERA of 0.89 with 80 strikeouts in 55 innings while finishing his high school career with 1.20 ERA and 143 strikeouts in 105 innings.
He appeared in 25 games as a freshman out of the bullpen going 0-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 40 innings pitched. He struggled with his control as he walked 31 batters but struck out 51 batters. He had a real breakout season in 2009 when he became the ace of the Ohio State pitching staff. He started 16 games while
going 9-2 with a 3.27 ERA as he tossed four complete games. He ended up striking out an astounding 136 batters in 104.2 innings of work. He continued to be a little wild as he walked 55 batters. He did hold opponents to a .211 batting average against. His best performance last season was against Michigan when he pitched a complete game no-hitter as he struck out 14 batters while walking four as his Buckeyes beat the Wolverines 6-0.
He spent the summer of 2009 in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Bourne Braves. He appeared in six games including four starts where he went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.23. He ended up striking out 37 batters in his 22 innings of work while walking 13 batters.
Wimmers will need to cut down on his walks and if he does that then he will be a higher selection in the MLB Draft and possibly a Top Ten selection.

Brian, have you interviewed Wimmers. If you do, please let me know. I agree with you but I think walks are part of his competitiveness. He does not give hitters a lot to hit. With a good season, he’s drafted in top five. Pirates will grab him for the 2nd starting role after transitioning him. He eats up innings and is consistent.
i saw alex pitched this year aganist indiana and he had 12 strike outs and nobody on the other team could hit off alex. he is a complete stud. at the game there were 8 major league team scouts watching him. we will see alex in the majors in a couple of years. he has a really fast fastball and a sick curve ball and changeups that just make hitters look bad
