BrandonWorkmanTexas The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 19 in our countdown with junior RHP Brandon Workman from Texas. He is a 6-5 220 pound right handed power pitcher from Bowie High School in Bowie Texas.

Workman went 5-2 with a 5.06 ERA in 21 appearances including six starts in his freshman season in 2008. He was able to pitch 53.1 innings while allowing 58 hits on the year. He struggled with his control while allowing 20 walks but did strikeout 49 batters. The opponents batting average against him was a respectable .279.

After his 2008 season with the Longhorns, he came to the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League where he pitched for the Wareham Gatemen. He made nine starts on the year accumulating a 3-3 record with a 3.44 ERA. His struggles with his control settled down this summer as he only walked 14 batters in 55 innings. We saw Workman in the 2008 CCBL All-Star game where he pitched one inning for the Western Division striking out two out of the three batters he faced. He featured a mid-90’s fastball on that day which really overpowered the hitters. Workman was ranked as the fifth best prospect in the CCBL by Baseball America after his strong summer.WorkmanAction

Workman made 20 appearances including 13 starts accumulating a 3-5 record with a 3.48 ERA in 75 innings of work while striking out 82 batters. He was a little wild as he allowed 28 walks while tossing six wild pitches and hitting seven batters. He held opponents to a .210 batting average. He pitched in five games this summer with the Wareham Gatemen where he went 1-1 with a 5.06 ERA in five games including three starts. Baseball America named him the 7th best prospect in the CCBL after last season.

Brian, another one that is a total headscratcher. Yes, Workman belongs on this listing, but to rank him well ahead of both Ruffin and Jungmann simply confirms once again that actual D-I performance has very little bearing on your rankings. We all know Workman has elite stuff and that the scouting community loves him. No doubt, he will accordingly be selected ahead of Ruffin in the upcoming draft. However, if this were truly a Top 100 player (vs. prospect) ranking, there is no way, no how Workman can possibly be ranked ahead of either Ruffin or Jungmann. As lights out as Workman has been on occassion, there have been other times he lets the game get away from him. Perhaps in the bullpen as closer, where he will likely pitch this year, the urgency of the situation will help his mental prep and allow him to reach his very high potential. However, to date, after two college seasons, he has been a very, very good pitcher who has yet to find the consistency to be truly elite. Such can not be said about Ruffin and Jungmann.
