Holy Cross releases 2010 Schedule

MattPerryHC WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross baseball team has released its 2010 schedule, announced by athletic director Richard M. Regan, Jr. and head coach Greg DiCenzo. The squad will play in 51 total games beginning in late February, starting on the road for 10 contests before hosting Quinnipiac at Fitton Field on March 20.

Santa Ana College Baseball Player Missing

Wernke James Wernke who was set to pitch for the Santa Ana College baseball team in a couple of months went missing on Sunday. Wernke recently signed a letter of intent to play with Long Beach State beginning in the 2011 season.

CBB Interview with Jim Penders (UConn)

Penders_2 The College Baseball Blog continues our series of interviews today with UConn head coach Jim Penders. He is entering his seventh season as the head coach and has been involved in the UConn program in 18 our of the last 20 seasons as a student-athlete, assistant coach, and his current role as the head coach. The Huskies finished last season with a 36-24 overall record while going 14-13 in Big East play as they finished in sixth place. They ended up losing to Louisville in the Big East Tournament final.

Top 100 Countdown: Number 36 Matt Harvey (North Carolina)

MattHarveyHeadshot The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 36 in our countdown with UNC RHP Matt Harvey. He is from Mystic Connecticut where he attended Fitch High School. He ended up setting career records at Fitch High School as he had 21 victories with 315 strikeouts and a 1.08 ERA over his four year career. He was named a three time all-state pick and a four-time all-conference choice. As a senior, he claimed high school All-America honors from Aflac, Under Armour, PlayStation and Louisville Slugger. Baseball America rated him as the number 1 high school player in the country during the 2007 season. Harvey’s strong commitment to North Carolina slipped him to a third round pick of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim but could not come to an agreement so he decided to head to college.

Indiana adds two for 2010 Season

MattErnestIndiana BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana baseball team has added a pair of right-handed pitchers to its roster for the 2010 season, head coach Tracy Smith announced today. Matt Ernest (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) and Casey Smith (Bloomington, Ind./North) will join the squad at the beginning of the spring semester.

"We obviously are a bit thin at pitcher heading into this season," Smith said. "These two will give us some depth in our pitching staff and have a good chance to be in the mix for weekend innings this spring."

ESPN talks about FSU’s Academic Scandal

FSULogo ESPN’s Outside the Lines recently looked into the Florida State Athletic program’s academic fraud case. Florida State is currently on four years of probation after it was found out that a learning specialist, an academic adviser and a tutor took tests and wrote papers for student-athletes. The baseball program was affected in the sanctions as they had a reduction in scholarships. Top 100 Countdown: Number 37 Hunter Morris (Auburn)

HunterMorrisHeadshot The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 37 in our countdown with Auburn junior infielder Hunter Morris. He is from Huntsville Alabama where he attended Grissom High School where he was a five year letterwinner for Adam Moseley. He had a career .470 average with 46 homers and 198 RBI. In his senior season, Morris hit .476 as a senior with 13 home runs and 44 RBI while scoring 67 runs. He won several awards including a four-time Huntsville City Player of the Year, North Alabama Super Metro Player of the Year and Alabama 6A All-State Player. He was also named an All-American by AFLAC, Rawlings, BCA and PlayStation.The Boston Red Sox selected him in the second round of the 2008 MLB Draft but could not come to agreement with him.

UPDATED: Murphy was Fired at Arizona State

UPDATED AT 7:20 PM ON DECEMBER 13TH

ncaa_mb_pmurph02_275 The turn that most of us that follow ASU baseball expected in the mysterious departure of head coach Pat Murphy has finally arrived.

It has steered us directly into a tree.

New documents show that Arizona State personally delivered a letter to Murphy on November 20, the same day he announced his immediate resignation, from AD Lisa Love stating that he was being terminated without cause, according to Jeff Metcalfe and Robert Anglen of the Arizona Republic.

New Mexico Baseball recieves National Guard Award

NationGuard ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.–The University of New Mexico baseball team put on a free baseball hitting clinic for children of service men and women in the National Guard at the Albuquerque Baseball Academy on Nov. 14. The Camp consisted of 38 campers, who were taught by the ABA staff as well as several Lobo baseball players. This is the second straight year that head coach Ray Birmingham has volunteered his services and the services of his team to those who help provide safety to the United States.

Duke Spends Weekend Volunteering

DukeVolunteer DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke baseball team wrapped up a fall semester of community service work with four projects in the Durham community on Saturday, Dec. 5.

All four classes ventured out to various spots in the Triangle to take on projects that they each planned. In all, the team volunteered at the Duke Children’s Hospital, the Urban Ministries of Durham Soup Kitchen, Girls on the Run and the Central Regional Hospital.

Arkansas State helps out Salvation Army

Arkansas State ASU head baseball coach Tommy Raffo and the Red Wolves baseball team got into the giving spirit of the holidays and participated in the Salvation Army’s third annual “Celebrity Bell Ringers Event” Saturday, Dec. 5 at different locations across Jonesboro.
