Former Northwestern coach George McKinnon Passes Away

GeorgeMcKinnonNU EVANSTON, Ill. – George McKinnon, a 1940 graduate of Northwestern University and the Wildcat head baseball coach for 20 seasons, passed away Monday at the age of 90.

McKinnon served as the head coach of the NU baseball program from 1962-81 and compiled a 304-391-6 record over that span. At the time of his retirement following the 1981 season, he was the school’s winningest coach in any sport.

Columbus set to host Big 10 Tourney through 2012 Season

Indiana2009BigTenTitle Park Ridge, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference, Huntington Park and the Greater Columbus Sports Commission announced today that Columbus, Ohio, will be home to the Big Ten Baseball Tournament for the 2010, 2011 and 2012 seasons. The Big Ten played its first neutral-site tournament since 1994 at Columbus’ Huntington Park in 2009 and will return to the ballpark in 2011 and 2012. Due to a facility conflict, the 2010 tournament will be held at Ohio State’s Bill Davis Stadium.

Top 100 Countdown: Number 34 Eric Pettis (UC-Irvine)

EricPettis The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 34 in our countdown with UC-Irvine senior RHP Eric Pettis. The West Hills, California native had an outstanding high school career at El Camino Real. He ended up being named the All-West Valley League Co-MVP while picking up All-City and All-League honors in two seasons. He led his team in his junior season to the 2005 CIF State Championship.

Austin Peay releases 2010 Schedule

AustinPeay2010SCHEDULE CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Opening day is 64 days away as Austin Peay State University baseball head coach Gary McClure unveiled his 2010 schedule, Wednesday.

Austin Peay will play 12 games against teams that played in last season’s NCAA tournament, including a two-game set, March 9-10, at Mississippi, which reached the NCAA Super Regionals. Also on the slate at home-and-away series against Western Kentucky (No. 23) and Vanderbilt (No. 29), who both joined Mississippi (No. 12) as teams ranked in 2009′s final Collegiate Baseball poll.

Campbell releases 2010 Schedule

Campbell2010Schedule BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Games against in-state rivals East Carolina, UNC Wilmington, and NC State, a matchup with 2009 regional opponent, Xavier University, and a 27-game conference schedule highlight the 2010 spring schedule for the Fighting Camels baseball squad.

This schedule marks the third in the tenure of Greg Goff but it promises to be one of the most challenging since his arrival in Buies Creek previous to the 2008 campaign. Campbell will face off against 21 different teams during the spring, with these teams having won a combined 516 contests during the 2009 season.

Former FSU Coach Charlie Armstrong Passes Away

CharlieArmstrongFSU TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Former Florida State baseball head coach and football assistant coach Charlie Armstrong, who led the Seminole baseball team in their first four years of the program’s existence, passed away on December 13, 2009 at Big Bend Hospice in Tallahassee. Charlie Armstrong was 87.

Armstrong coached the first four Florida State baseball teams and was the first assistant football coach in FSU history when head coach Don Veller hired the former Indiana University star in 1948. Armstrong literally started the FSU baseball program from scratch pulling together a team and equipment while posting winning records in each of the first four years from 1948-51. He finished with a career coaching record of 46-29 over his four seasons in Tallahassee collecting a season-high 13 wins in 1950 and 1951.

We continue the list today with number 35 in our countdown with Texas RHP Chance Ruffin. He is from Austin Texas where he attended Lake Travis High School. During his senior season, he went 11-2 with a 1.17 ERA while striking out 132 batters. He picked up several awards including team MVP, All-District 27-4A and All-CenTex honors. As a junior, he went 10-4 record with a 1.26 ERA and 121 strikeouts to earn second-team All-District 27-4A.

Nicholls State University Release 2010 Baseball Schedule

2010 NCBWA Division 2 Preseason All-American Team Announced

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Dowling College senior pitcher Gabriel Duran headlines the list of NCAA Division II baseball players named today to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II Preseason All-America teams.

The 2009 NCBWA Division II national “Pitcher of the Year,” Duran was one of four players named to the Preseason All-America team who also earned first-team All-NCBWA All-America honors last spring. He was joined in that group by Mesa State outfielder Kevin Becker, who earned All-America honors as a second baseman in 2009, South Carolina Aiken designated hitter Travis Howard and Lynn University starting pitcher Dan Wright.

CCBL releases 2010 Schedule

CCBLLOGO CAPE COD, Mass. – An expanded playoff format and 10 seven-inning doubleheaders highlight the 2010 schedule for the Cape Cod Baseball League, announced today by CCBL Commissioner Paul Galop.

The CCBL season begins Sunday, June 13 with Cotuit at Wareham being the only game on the Cape that evening and the league will feature five seven-inning doubleheaders on Saturday, June 19 and again Sunday, June 27 with all 10 teams hosting one twin-bill.
