Top 100 Countdown: Number 24 Chad Bettis (Texas Tech)

ChadBettis The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 24 in our countdown with Texas Tech RHP Chad Bettis. He is from Lubbock Texas and attended Lubbock Monterey High School. In his senior season, he posted a 1.11 ERA and an 11-2 record in 88 innings of work and 12 starts while striking out 109 batters and only allowed 11 walks and 14 earned runs. He received many awards including being selected to the Texas Sports Writers First-Team All-State list, Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s South Plains Player of the Year recipient, THSBCA All-Star, First-Team All-State, District 2-5A Most Valuable Player, First-Team All-District,  and Louisville Slugger High School All-American honorable mention honors. He was selected by the Houston Astros in the 2007 MLB Draft in the eighth round but decided to attend Texas Tech.

 

Chad’s first season saw him make 12 starts while going 4-5 with a 6.75 ERA serving as the Sunday starter. He spent the summer of 2008 in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Falmouth Commodores where he made nine appearances including eight starts. He accumulated a 3-0 record with a 2.68 ERA in a team high 43.2 innings pitched. Bettis struck out 39 batters while allowing 17 walks.

Bettis had a better sophomore campaign with the Red Raiders as he worked mostly out of the bullpen. He made 23 appearances including four starts while pitching in ChadBettisAction 72.2 innings which was the team high. Chad had a record of 6-1 with a team low 3.59 ERA while picking up seven saves. After the season was over, Bettis was selected for the USA Collegiate National Team. He pitched in nine games while not picking up a decision but grabbed three saves while accumulating an ERA of 3.00. He also held opponents to a batting average of .100.
