GUVolunteer Washington, D.C. – Recently the Georgetown University baseball team participated in the American Heart Association’s 2009 Start! Greater Washington Heart Walk. The student athletes were placed along the 2.9-mile muddy loop that circled the National Mall.  The team braved cold temperatures to volunteer and help raise funds and awareness in the fight against the nation’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers-heart disease and stroke. They joined a large gathering of other participants and helped the event raise over a million dollars in donations.

"The heart walk was a phenomenal time," senior Billy Concannon said. "I think Mike Garza really stood out. He showed incredible perseverance while holding the finish-line flag during the entire walk. Also, many other Hoya baseball players bonded with the cause while passing out bottles of water to thirsty walkers. Overall, it was a great day for Georgetown Baseball and we hope to participate again next year."

"The kids who participated in this event exemplify the type of student-athlete we have here at Georgetown," Head Coach Pete Wilk said. "They are of the utmost character and all the credit should go to those kids and Coach Curtis Brown for his work in getting everyone involved."

"In regards to the walk, it was a great opportunity for our team to help an organization that is trying to help other people," senior Tommy Lee said. "The players on this team love playing for our surrounding community and school and couldn’t have thought of a better way to represent them by contributing to this walk. Plus, it never hurts to have some fun in the process whether it be throwing water bottles to thirsty walkers, getting to be a dog’s best friend (because we had a box of treats), or simply wearing volunteer gear to help vendors show their support. We had a great time and were proud to be part of such an important cause."

The Hoyas start play on February 19 at Davidson. The first home series is February 26-28 against NYIT.
