BryanMorgado The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 50 in our countdown with junior LHP Bryan Morgado of Tennessee. He is from Miami Florida where he graduated from Florida Christian High School. His senior season saw him lead the team to a 29-2 overall record and win a state title. He went a competent 9-1 with a 0.76 ERA as a junior in 2005 with 117 strikeouts in 67.1 innings pitched. The Boston Red Sox selected him in the 2006 MLB Draft in the 34th round but he decided to head to Tennessee.

Morgado sat out the 2007 season as he underwent arm surgery in the fall of 2006. His first action was during the 2008 season when he appeared in 14 games (13 starts) as he accumulated a 5-5 record with an ERA of 4.59 as he was the Saturday starter for the Vols. He was one of the top strikeout pitchers in the country as he struck out 104 batters in only 80.1 innings of work. He also held opponents to a .239 batting average against. He was a second-team selection on the Pro-Line Athletic/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Freshman All-America Team.

In the 2009 season, Bryan worked primarily out of the bullpen as he made 20 appearances and only five starts. He had a 4-2 record with a 6.36 ERA in 52.1 innings but continued to his high strikeout totals with 75 on the season. After the season, the Chicago White Sox selected him with the 101st overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft. He spent the summer of 2009 in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Bourne Braves as the White Sox negotiated with him. He went 2-1 with a 3.06 ERA in eight appearances including six starts. He also continued to strike out a ton of batters as he had 47 in only 32.1 innings of work. At the end of the summer, the White Sox and Morgado could not come to terms on a deal bringing him back for his redshirt junior season. Baseball America rated him top 5 players at the Cape this summer, Perfect Game rated him 13th best college player for 2010, This comming season will be Tennesse’s Ace, that means he’s a Friday guy in the SEC, the best conference in the nation. For the last 3 year has one of the best Strike outs per nine innings ratio in D-1 schools with 12.5, and has a fastball that last year as a releaver touched 97, as a stater sits 92-94, was the 4th lefty picked in the 2009 MLB draft, is without a dought the most athletic pitcher in next years draft.
I beleive Morgado should have been minimal top 20 players, Are you just throwing names out there, because your way off with Morgado!

He has the talent to be an elite pitcher but has failed to even come close to his potential.

Last season, he only made five starts after making 13 starts as a freshman. It is not like he was moved to the pen to be the closer as he only had two saves last season.

He has problems with his control as evidenced by his 36 walks allowed last season in only 52.1 innings of work. He also walked 15 guys in the Cape in 32.1 innings.

The reality is that Morgado’s tools have not been realized in performance. That’s nothing new. While BA and PG rated him highly, that is largely because they tend to rate toward metrics and how someone can develop at the professional level. That is very different than producing right now.

Ultimately, Morgado’s numbers at the Cape were so so (a 3.00 ERA there is nothing to really write home about… nor is it something to sneeze at), but how can you say a kid should be top 20 when he couldn’t keep his ERA under 6.00 as a sophomore.

And that he is expected to be the Vols Saturday starter may say more about Todd Raleigh and the current state of the Vols’ program than it does about Morgado’s abilities.

Philllies. 141 Overall. Did my Phils get a steal, or are you re-calibrating your enthusiasm?

I wouldn’t say that….Morgado has never lived up to his expectations from his summer league days. He needs to be more consistent with location.
