Top 100 Countdown: Number 65 Matt Jensen (Cal Poly)

MattJensenCalPoly The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 65 in our countdown with Cal Poly sophomore second baseman Matt Jensen. He is from Clovis California where he attended Clovis East High School. He picked up four letters playing under head coach Jeff Prieto where he hit .458 with six doubles, five triples, eight home runs, 21 RBIs and 36 runs scored. Jensen was also solid on the mound as he went 5-3 with a 2.29 ERA while striking out 55 batters in 52 innings as he threw two complete games and a shutout. He picked up several honors including All-Tri-River Athletic Conference honors all four years and also earned All-Valley and All-Regional honors. He was also named a third-team All-American as a senior. The Seattle Mariners selected him in the 11th round in the 2008 MLB draft but Jensen decided to head to Cal Poly to play under Larry Lee.

Louisiana Student Athletes to read to Elementary Students

LouisianaReadtoStudents LAFAYETTE – University of Louisiana student-athletes from all sports will be participating in a bus tour to promote literacy and give back to their former elementary schools on November 16 and 17, 2009.  While riding on the Ragin’ Cajuns-wrapped Calco bus, student-athletes will be visiting elementary schools in the Acadiana area and reading Jady Regard’s book Born to Be a Ragin’ Cajun to the elementary school students.

Stetson Fall Series starts on Monday

StetsonFallSeries Stetson head baseball coach Pete Dunn has announced the dates for the annual Hatter Series. The seven-game series will run from November 16-21 on Melching Field. This intersquad event traditionally signals the end of the fall baseball season. The Stetson seniors are divided into two teams. The seniors will then get together and create a draft to fill out the rosters for each team.

Former UCLA star Matt Schwenke passes away

MattSchwenkePhoto Former UCLA baseball player Matt Schwenke passed away on Tuesday at his home in Trabuco Hills, Calif.

Schwenke, 37, played at UCLA from 1991-93, serving as the team’s starting catcher for three consecutive seasons. Selected in the ninth round of the 1993 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers, Schwenke enjoyed a six-year career in professional baseball and earned his degree in history at UCLA.

Top 100 Countdown: Number 66 BA Vollmuth (Southern Miss)

BAVollmuthSouthernMiss The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 66 in our countdown with Southern Miss sophomore shortstop BA Vollmuth. He is from Biloxi, Mississippi where he was a three year captain of the Biloxi High School baseball squad under Kevin Burdine. His senior season saw him hit .390 with six homers and 37 RBI while picking up multiple honors including being named A Clarion Ledger 1st team All-State Selection, Clarion Ledger Dandy Dozen Team and Sun Herald All-South Team. He was even better in his junior year when he batted .423 with eight homers and 36 RBI. He was drafted in the 32nd round by the Houston Astros but decided to head to Southern Miss to play under Corky Palmer for a season and will be playing for Scott Berry this season.

Top 100 Countdown: Number 67 Cameron Rupp (Texas)

CameronRuppHeadShot The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 67 in our countdown with Texas junior catcher Cameron Rupp. He is from Plano Texas and attended Prestonwood Christian Academy where he picked up three letters. His senior season saw him bat at a .644 clip with six homers and 55 RBI in 32 games while leading the squad to a state championship game appearance. He won multiple awards after his senior season including being named district MVP, all-state, Rawlings All-American and Louisville Slugger All-America honors. He also had an outstanding junior season as he hit .500 with 12 doubles, five home runs and 35 RBI to earn district MVP, all-state and Aflac All-America honors as a junior, helping team win a district title with a 24-5 record and earn a state semifinal appearance. He was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 43rd round in the 2007 draft but decided to head to Austin to play under legendary head coach Augie Garrido.

Utah signs Eight for 2011

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg announced the signing of eight student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Five high school players and three junior college transfers will join the Utes next season. Coming from high school are Trey Nielsen (3B, Skyline HS, Utah), Cory Hunt (2B, Jordan HS, Utah), Ben Mordini (RHP, Cherry Creek HS, Colo.), Luke West (RHP, Juan Diego Catholic HS, Utah), Josh Alexander (OF, Mountain Pointe HS, Arizona) while James Brooks (SS/Utility, Cochise College, Arizona), Derek Christensen (RHP, SLCC, Utah) and Dustin Hobbs (RHP/Yavapai College) are the junior college transfers.

What would possess someone who works in institutional equity sales and trading for a top-tier investment bank to participate in an event that features a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run?
