Top 100 Countdown: Number 57 Eric Harrington (Lamar)

EricHarringtonLamar The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 57 in our countdown with Lamar sophomore RHP Eric Harrington. He is from Groves Texas and attended Port Neches-Groves High School where he had an outstanding career. He was a three-time All-District selection while being named All-State as a senior in 2008 following an 8-1 campaign with a 1.03 ERA . He was also strong in his junior season with a 10-2 record with a 2.52 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 71.3 innings pitched. He also hit .340 while playing center field. As a sophomore, he posted a 1-1 record with a 2.33 ERA and hit .300 at the plate while picking up district Newcomer of the Year.

Kentucky signs Nine for 2010 Season

LEXINGTON, Ky. – After securing two top-six recruiting classes in his first two seasons at the helm of the Kentucky baseball program, UK head coach Gary Henderson announced Monday that nine talented prospects have signed national letters of intent.

“We are really excited about our 2010 class,” Henderson said. “The last two years, we have had top-ranked classes and this group of student-athletes is every bit as good. One of the best things about this class is that we have a solid group of Kentucky kids who come to UK. We are extremely excited that we could keep these Kentucky guys home for their college careers.”

Western Illinois hires Mike Villano as head coach

MikeVillano MACOMB, Ill – Western Illinois University has announced the hiring of Mike Villano as its new head baseball coach, Monday, Nov. 23.

Villano takes over the program after the passing of Stan Hyman, who served as head coach of the Leathernecks for eight seasons.

"This is a bittersweet announcement in that we will always remember Stan Hyman as a great person and a great baseball coach," Western Illinois Director of Athletics Dr. Tim M. Van Alstine said.

Vanderbilt ties Hosei University 4-4

SonnyGrayVanderbilt TOKYO- Vanderbilt and Hosei played to a 4-4 tie in a game that ended after nine innings due to darkness.

Sophomore right-hander Sonny Gray started for Vanderbilt. Gray struck out the side in the first inning, and recorded four straight strikeouts before allowing allowing a single to Hosei designated hitter Kameda. A hit batter moved Kameda to second base and a single by Ohyagi put Hosei up 1-0.  An error by senior shortstop Brian Harris allowed Ohyagi to score and increase Hosei’s lead to 2-0 after two innings. Gray finished with seven strikeouts over four innings before being removed from the game.

St. John’s releases 2010 Schedule

EdBlankmeyerStJohn's QUEENS, N.Y. – Head baseball coach Ed Blankmeyer has officially announced the schedule for the 2010 season. The 55-game schedule features non-conference trips to Louisiana, Florida, Tennessee and Virginia, and four opponents that qualified for the 2009 NCAA Tournament.

"Our non-conference schedule is once again very challenging," said Blankmeyer. "These early trips against tough opponents will prepare us for the always difficult BIG EAST schedule."

USC Upstate Baseball Announces 56-Game 2010 Schedule

USCUpstate SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate baseball team has proven, even with the move to Division I, that it is not afraid of a challenge, and the 2010 season will be no exception, as the Spartans will play 32 of its 56 games in 2010 against teams that finished 2009 with non-losing records, 21 against teams with 30 or more wins, 18 against teams with an RPI of better than 100 and seven against teams that competed in the NCAA Regionals, as head coach Matt Fincher announced the schedule on Monday.

Top 100 Countdown: Number 58 Gary Brown (Cal-State Fullerton)

GaryBrownFullerton The CBB continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today with number 58 in our countdown with Cal-State infielder/outfielder Gary Brown. He is from Diamond Bar, California where he attended Diamond Bar High School. He was a three year letter winner under former Cal-State Fullerton player Rich Gonzalez. His senior season saw him hit.612 with 4 home runs while being named the Sierra League’s Most Valuable Player, garnered All-CIF and All-Inland Valley First Team recognition, and was tabbed a second-team All-American by Baseball America. Brown was selected in the 12th round by the Oakland A’s in the 2007 MLB Draft.

Duke Baseball runs “Read with the Blue Devils” program

DukeBaseballReading DURHAM, N.C. – Members of the Duke baseball team wrapped up their participation in Duke University and Verizon’s "Read With The Blue Devils" program, which sends Duke student-athletes to local elementary schools to read to third-grade students.

The Read With The Blue Devils program is intended to aid area teachers by providing reading incentives for third graders in Durham. By reading for 15 minutes for 12 nights, a youngster is able to reach various levels and earn Blue Devil gifts along the way.  Among the prizes given out are autographed team photos, posters, t-shirts and chances to meet Duke student-athletes at various functions.

ULM Baseball Donates Blood to LifeShare Blood Center

ULMBloodDonation MONROE, La.-The ULM baseball team continued its commitment to give back to the community as the Warhawks visited the LifeShare Blood Center in Monroe on Wednesday.

The losing team of the annual Maroon & Gold Fall Series – now in its sixth year – donates blood, leading to series being dubbed the "Blood Series."

Stony Brook helps at Bone Marrow Drive

TylerJohnsonStonyBrook Stony Brook, N.Y. – Stony Brook University’s baseball team recently helped out in the fight against leukemia, lending its hand in a campus bone marrow drive held at the Student Activities Center. The purpose of the drive was to raise awareness of the need for bone marrow and stem cell donors in addition to allowing students and faculty the opportunity to register as potential bone marrow and stem cell donors.

Marshall visits Cabell Huntington Hospital

MarshallBaseball HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University baseball team visited the Cabell Huntington Hospital on Wednesday, Nov. 18 as an outreach to the community.

The MU players and coaching staff visited numerous children at the hospital that were fighting against various illnesses. The team handed out autographed baseballs in hopes to brighten the children’s days.
